Summary

One love. One motorcycle club. Two stepbrothers.

Ryder. Controlling. Ambitious. Protective.

Jed. Self-destructive. Trapped. Lonely.

Their love? Forbidden. Taboo. All-consuming.

For Jed, the Coffin Nails Motorcycle Club is family. With them, he learned how to think, what to enjoy, and how to fight, but there is one thing he knows his friends can’t find about. They would never accept him as gay, and so his life is a constant struggle with desires that fill him with despair. Only there is a much darker secret lurking in Jed’s heart. His feelings for his stepbrother, Ryder, go far beyond brotherly. Trapped with a yearning that can never be fulfilled, Jed spirals out of control and unwillingly puts the love of his life in danger.

Ryder is climbing up the ranks. Recently promoted to sergeant-at-arms, he has it all: Drive, respect, and the love of his biker family. When his stepbrother gets into trouble with the law, Ryder decides to take the blame and save him from a long sentence. Deep inside, he knows there is nothing he wouldn’t do for Jed, but through a desperate attempt to suppress his own hidden desires, he might irreversibly break the man he secretly loves.

But finding out what they feel for each other will test their loyalty to the Coffin Nails MC and change their lives forever.

Wonderfully chaotic with plenty of steamy romance

I've never found an author who can write gritty, motorcycle club chaos the way that K. A. Merikan can. I wasn't even sure if I liked the Coffin Nails MC and I still found myself sucked into the crazy ups and downs of their journey.

Though the romance was an achingly slow build in the first half of this audio, the neverending blackmail, betrayal, partying, and deal-making the Coffin Nails engaged in made this story feel like a nonstop rollercoaster ride. It was thrilling to listen to Jed angst over his years-long attraction to his stepbrother, even if sometimes I thought I was going to lose my mind waiting for him to make a move. The buildup of all those emotions was insanely overwhelming, and I can't imagine how hard it must have been for Jed to repress his desires for so long. If Jed's chapters were an open admission of his cravings, Ryder's were a much more puzzling picture. When this story started I was sure Jed's feelings were one-sided, but little details kept sneaking in to question my assumptions. There's no doubt that Ryder felt an intense need to protect his stepbrother, but it was fascinating to see his sexual attraction to him emerge as this story progressed.

With the two of them circling each other, angsting over their feelings, and trying to deal with the train wreck of their MC, it came as no surprise that Jed reached his breaking point. That heartpounding moment on the cliffs was a huge turning point for Ryder and Jed, and as much as it made me panic to see how desperate Jed was to ease his pain, I was also estatic to see the two of them take a chance on being honest with each other. What followed were some of the most incredibly erotic, secret hookups imaginable. Ryder and Jed didn't let anything dampen their passion when they were alone, and they explored and savored every sexual act together. Even more thrilling was knowing that their secret nights together weren't just a physical release--Jed and Ryder cared about each other, protected each other, and loved each other in a way that surpassed everything else. Even when the Coffin Nails took a nosedive so deep I wasn't sure they could recover, even when Dana reared her ugly head to threaten to expose their secrets, I never doubted that Jed and Ryder would fight to stay together. They may not have been able to count on the Coffin Nails to accept their sexuality, but they could always count on each other. Their journey didn't end with hearts and roses and running off into the sunset together, but it made me fiercely happy to see them find a way to keep their MC identity and a romantic relationship.

Intense and Gripping

One Step Too Close is the sixth book in the Sex and Mayhem series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. The entire Sex and Mayhem series is wonderful, and I highly suggest reading all of them just because they are so darn good. However, this book is not for everyone – it’s dark and gritty with morally grey characters who don’t hold back on violence.

I LOVED this book. Usually I’m not a huge fan of forbidden love, but Jed and Ryder are such fascinating characters that I was utterly sucked into their relationship and immediately invested in their happiness. The plot was fresh and through me for a few loops – I was not expecting some of the outcomes and loved that K.A. Merikan can still surprise me. The audiobook was also well done—Wyatt Baker does a fantastic job narrating the book and really brings out the intensity of their personalities and relationship. The audiobook production was also well done and paired with the fantastic story it made for a wonderful experience.

Acceptance of oneself

This authors always make a great combination of dark and romance stories—and very long, steamy scenes also. Their characters backgrounds and vulnerability are so touching.
I didn’t like Jed at the beginning, his irresponsibility and recklessness were exasperating. But the bridge scene is absolute breathtaking.
And the end? A very good one.

«You wanna push me yet?». Jed
«No. No I’d never push you». Ryder

Motorcycle club, stepbrothers, and forbidden love

I really enjoyed this audiobook and it’s depiction of the forbidden love that develops between two stepbrothers who were raised as brothers in a motorcycle club. Ryder is the responsible older brother who is willing to do anything to protect Jed. He has strange feelings for Jed, which he steadfastly pushes away. Jed is the younger brother, who was abandoned by his mother and also bears the burden of being gay in the homophobic MC world. He also has strong (sexual) feelings for Ryder. After a near tragedy, both men confess their feelings to the other, and they must decide how to navigate their future with each other and the motorcycle club. Can they keep their feelings secret? What will happen if the other Club members find out? Complicating life are Jed’s horrible, blackmailing girlfriend who has compromising pictures of Jed, an important drug deal in the works, and lazy Club members in need of a shake-up. I really liked that this audiobook/book presents a realistic picture of gay members and motorcycle clubs. In the end, they DON’T all accept, cozy-up, and sing kumbaya. Much hate, prejudice, and rejection remains, but Ryder and Jed find a way through it.

WARNING: This audiobook is realistic and gritty in it’s portrayal of club life, including morally ambiguous characters, attempted non-consensual sex, drug and alcohol use, drug running, theft, sexual promiscuity, toxic masculinity, and homophobia. There are also some instances of “club justice” (including beatings and arson).

The narration is excellent and well-portrays the rough bikers, while also softening up for the gentler exchanges and hot, sexy times between Jed and Ryder.

deliciously dark and taboo

I read this book when it first came out and loved it, so I jumped at the chance to revisit it in audio format. Ryder will do just about anything for his stepbrother, even a stint in jail. Jed has been keeping some big secrets, terrified that he will be kicked out of the club for being gay, not to mention the tiny detail that he has been in love with Ryder since they were teens. I loved this dark, taboo story

Step-Brothers in Love

Yet again K.A. Merikan have produced a 5 star story, One Step Too Close - Coffin Nails Mc Louisiana ticked all the boxes for me. Two Alpha males, motorcycles, violence, and really hot explicit sex.
These two authors are well known for their books containing the dark and taboo so don’t buy if you are easily offended.
Jed and Ryder are my favourite characters in this series so far, their love for each other was so unconditional and based on a firm base of trust and friendship.
It all ended a little too quick for my liking, the epilogue could have done with being a little longer but I will forgive that.

One of my favorite of this series!

One of the less darker stories of this series I would say (but still no butterflies and rainbows here ahah).
They are not blood related brothers so it's not that wrong (to each they own moral rules hihi).
I liked the sweetness there is between them and there are some really emotional "scenes". The backstory is interested as well and it feels pretty real regarding the reaction of the other bikers to Jed's sexuality.

Great narration by Wyatt Baker once again. His voice is just perfect for this series!

If you love Sex & Mayhem Series and look for something less dark than "His favorite color is blood" it's a must!

Highly recommend it!

Tremendous Story! Fabulous Performance by W. Baker

I always enjoy K.A. Merikan's novels, the depth of their characters and the complexity of the arc in their stories is definitely a treat. One Step Too Close delves deeply into both Jed and Ryder's actions, motivations, and reactions, and follows them through quite a journey!

While the Merikan's stories are never predictable, I literally had no idea how not only Jed and Ryder, but the whole MC, were going to get through this one. Edge of my seat, fantastic!

Wyatt Baker delivers a spectacular performance in the audio version of One Step Too Close. He always comes up with the best voices for his characters, and he's outdone himself here. He's perfected the perfect youthful hooligan scallywag for Jed, and the rough, emotional tones he brings out of Ryder adds so much to his personality. Mr. Baker also paces this one wonderfully well. The intensity builds, reaches a crescendo, builds some more, until I couldn't tell which end was up... and it was amazing! A tremendous episode of this series.
