As the season begins, Eliza is shocked to discover that she won't even be given the chance to choose her own husband - and that the Melrose family fortune hangs in the balance...

But will she risk everything for just one night with the Duke?

Listened twice already

Loved this book so much, not ashamed to say I’ve listened twice already. Wasn’t sure on the 1st person narrative at first but soon settled in and Aurora Dawson-Hunte’s narration was amazing! Can’t wait for the next one in the series

Wow, another great book from JEM

I was looking forward to this, to see how much I would recognise Jodi's normal style. I have to say it's definitely here. It was nice to have it wrapped up in a different era though. If you love Jodi's usual books then I am sure you will love this. If you love historical stories like Pride and Prejudice then again I think you will love this. I definitely look forward to hearing more historical stories from Jodi. As far as the audio side goes the Narrator Aurora is really good and creates each character well.

OK ish

Whilst I generally enjoy her writing I’m on the bench over this one , I admit this is my first historical book and was unsure what to expect . I can clearly see why the narrator was selected for the book , I think it will need a second listen to absorb it more , I needed more Jonny and also think a dual narration would have improved it for me .
Orion audio really do need to do more research on narrators this is not the first time they have got it wrong …sorry .
I also think the book was dragged out a little to much, sorry

OK ish

I can see why this gets mixed reviews, some of the story is ok and the rest rather dull. Narration was good by Aurora.
I don't think I'll be bothering with book 2 when it comes out!

OK, but that's all

This was tolerable. I'm glad I didn't pay full price or a whole credit for it, but got it on a 2for1 offer. I've certainly listened to better.

The narrator was tolerable too, again I've heard much better with a better range of voices.

Overall, the whole thing of being told in the first person was very odd and getting to the conclusion was like pulling hen's teeth and I'm not sure it was worth the effort to get there. Also, all the modern critical tropes of everyday realities of the time were annoying eg talking about not liking the "ton clothes", alluding to her corset, when EVERY woman whether the height of the ton, living in the country or working in the fields would have worn corsets! It's like saying women in the country wouldn't have worn a bra just because they lived in the country! Ridiculous!

I certainly can't understand all the glowing 5* reviews, they must not have read many other HR books if they consider this "up there"!! I'd probably give it a B or perhaps a B+ with a "can do better"

Well worth a listen

Really enjoyed this, easy to listen to not to many characters (I sometimes forget who is who) but I followed this fine and thought the story as just the right length with a good ending
