Summary

Humanity is on the brink of annihilation. Only one man can turn the tide.

For centuries, we explored the stars and settled new worlds. But a mysterious alien threat emerged, launching devastating attacks and seizing entire star systems. Every fifty years they come, silent and relentless, before disappearing again into the dark. And as they close in on humanity’s home worlds, one more defeat could mean total extinction.

Captain Jim Garrett joined the navy to fight back. But when a delicate mission ends in madness and mutiny, Garrett takes the blame and his career is left in ruins.

Now, the only thing he commands is a construction site. The CNS Surprise is an experimental warship, half built in the dockyards of Midway Station. Garrett knows the ship inside out, but the navy brass would never let him take the helm, let alone lead her in battle.

But when the aliens strike early, with unexpected ferocity, it’s clear that every ship in the fleet will be needed. And the Surprise could be the only hope of slowing the enemy onslaught.

Garrett is thrust into command for the first time, launching straight into combat. He must unite a maverick crew and master new technologies, as he leads a desperate counterstrike that will decide mankind’s future.

Off Midway Station is a military SF adventure of high-stakes space warfare, nail-biting action, and characters you would gladly follow into battle. A monumental journey of courage, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of survival, it’s perfect for fans of Jack Campbell, David Weber, and Marko Kloos.

Different and very good

I like the patient build up of the characters and the plot, Looking forward to the next in the series if it's out yet.

Got me Hooked. its off to a really good start.

this was surprisingly griping. Even though the plot has only just started i have few complaints so far, a lot of question but in a good way.
I like the main character and his build up. i feel like there should be a couple more off officers with more depth but i suppose we have to wait and see. i do find it a weird choice to use the premiss of an enemy that comes out of nowhere every 50 years. some writing choices and choice of words used i found to be eyerolly for lack of a better word.
But all in all i loved it and looking forward to the next one 👍

I liked it

Story starts slow but I guess that's normal in a multi series book, expeditionary force was the same in the beginning so no stars removed only because of that

liked that it had good character development and speed starts to pickup, would give it a chance.

Also liked the narrator

Slow burn

This book slowly builds up the background, characters, plot, but it tantalises you with the possibilities in the future, can’t wait for the next book

excellent story teller

a combination of modern star trek, star wars, and spaceship destruction ala starship troopers. lots of graphic battle detail in Marcs' style. the science is thourghly explained but not jargon to confuse, and you can more than imagine (if a fan of said films) most of the descriptions.
not my usual genre in books, I prefer to see this type of story, but trusting the author I've followed for yrs.
narration is also very good.
