A great dystopian scifi story

The author has created a very interesting world and I'm curious to find out more about this dystopian society. I'm also really intrigued by the military system. The book was full of action and adventure, very fast paced and with some really intense nail biting moments. It's a character driven story and Sam was a great protagonist. I was able to connect with her and care for her immediately. The rest of the cast was also very interesting and I liked them all. The book ends in a big cliffhanger and I hope we'll get the second one soon because I want to find out what will happen next!
The narrator voiced Sam and the rest of the characters beautifully. Sometimes I felt like I was watching a movie. Fantastic.

An intense, thrilling rollercoaster from start to finish

Sam “Valkyrie” Ryan serves in the marines with her brother Scott. They protect the population from fights between the Altered (a biologically enhanced humans) and a Human splinter terrorist group called the Children of Charon. Sam is blindsided by Scott’s decision not to renew his military contract after his next assignment. She is hurt and confused as he hasn’t explained why but she is determined to change his mind.

Sam and Scott are recruited into Echo Company tasked with securing Matam, a conflict-ridden town and protecting attendees of peace talks between the Altered and Humans. Sam becomes enamoured with Miriam, a female medic in Echo whose charisma distracts Sam from her plans to change Scott’s mind. Echo quickly faces dangerous combat when terrorists attack them on their journey to the talks. Sam’s world is rocked a second time when shocking revelations about her past forces her to question everything she knows about herself.

When a plot to destroy all of humanity is uncovered, can Sam and her fellow marines thwart the terrorist’s plans or will Echo Company be killed before they can prevent the devasting plot from occurring?

This was an intense, thrilling rollercoaster from start to finish, ending on a cliffhanger that left me reeling! Sam was an incredible character to read with multiple layers of deep emotions, complicated backstory, and personal conflicts stemming from the fallout of the shocking discovery about her family’s past. The slow burn queer romance between Sam and Miriam was beautifully written and it added another level to an already brilliant story. The worldbuilding was fascinating as it was created around a world that caused its own demise due to pollution/climate change and instead of seeking to resolve these issues, they created Altered Humans to survive in the harsher conditions they created, causing a cataclysmic rift in society. It might be sci-fi, but it felt very realistic and a bit close to home. Overall, a compelling journey through the highs and lows of humanity and I can’t wait to read book 2.
