About this listen

From the author of Do Me No Harm and What Goes Around.

You can bury the past, but it never dies.

Isla's brother, an ex-marine and private investigator, has just been found drowned in the River Clyde. The coroner declares it an accidental death. The police are happy to close the case. But Isla is convinced he was murdered. Determined to find out what really happened the night Dougie died and what he was doing in Glasgow, she starts looking into his unsolved cases. What she finds will put her in grave danger and force her to question everything she thought she knew about those closest to her....

Enjoyable

Was surprised by first person narration but quite liked it after a couple of chapters.

Interesting tale

I liked the slightly different aspect of narrative voice in this novel: The narrator recounting her story as though in conversation with her dead, beloved twin. Some of the characters and capers were a bit far - fetched but it was entertaining to tge end. A particularly strong reader helped to bring the story to life.

Good grief!

I wouldn’t call this tense or a thriller. Most of it is about grief and how to deal with it.
It’s well read and written, but you feel like you’ve been through the emotional wringer at times. Towards the end the pace picks up and the ‘who dunnit’ answer is revealed.
An ok listen.

Written to a deadline?

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I would make it faster paced, more eventful, and above all I would supply an ending.

What could Julie Corbin have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Not have lost interest in it following the single revelation and the single action scene.

What does Helen McAlpine bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

She's a good reader, and brought the characters to life.

Excellent

Loved it. The characters were strong and well- rounded, the plot had enough tension to keep you hooked - I found myself sneaking off to get a fix

Great book, bad listening quality

Book kept getting stuck at 10.53, very frustrating. Great story line and narration just a shame the tech got stuck
