About this listen

From the author of Captain Corelli's Mandolin; a heart-warming collection of stories inspired by life in an English village. Casting his mind back to the village where he grew up, Louis de Bernières brings us a forgotten England: where a lady might dress in plus fours, a retired general might give up wearing clothes and a spiritualist might live with her sister and the ghost of her husband. Here we find the atmosphere of those times as it was in the countryside, and the people whose lives are worth celebrating.

I absolutely loved this audiobook. Gorgeously evocative, beautifully and engagingly read.
I suspect it will join a couple of others in my library (e.g. Restoration [Tremain, Degas]) that withstand periodic re-listening.

I love this book as it takes me back to how village life was, even though
I'm in my early 50's,
i do remember people being more respectable and understanding
and the buzz of the village day to day goings on to the maypole dancing to the cows being moved to one end of the village to the other ready for milking to the goats being pegged down to eat the grass of the village green.
all this is gone .
this book brings it all back with wonderful much loved memories.

fantastic fabulous and very endearing,

The writer created a lovely feel of rural Britain with a very easy feel to the book. I listened to the book at a very stressful time on the way in and out of visiting my husband in hospital and the voice of this narrator was very soothing. I love the way in which Louis de Bernières writes and the language he uses and although not a lover of short stories I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

This wonderful story has just ended. It has brought back memories of a pre war childhood spent in a small Yorkshire village just outside York. A lost England that lives on in my heart. Thank you Louis.
