Summary

Misanthrope. Iconoclast. Apostate. Drunk. Many words have been used to describe Doug Stanhope, but rarely has “hopeful” been one of them. However, heading into 2016, Stanhope peered through the apocalyptic fog and saw a forecast that was more rainbows than acid rain: His first book was set for release, his new stand-up special was in the can, and he was about to film a television pilot with his friend and confidant Johnny Depp. The sharks of Hollywood were circling, and Stanhope’s pockets were filled with chum. The only thing that could stop Doug was himself, and that’s exactly what he did.

First came the booze, then came the pills, then came the stripper, and then, Doug came. A tryst aboard a cruise ship leaves him literally and figuratively adrift when his scorned wife, Bingo, reveals she is in love with another man: a jug-sippin’, guitar-pickin’ hobo. A simple, black-out fling turns out to be a pebble tossed into the lake of you-know-what named 2016, and in No Encore for the Donkey, Stanhope traces the resulting rings.

Written and performed by Stanhope, his third memoir follows the veteran comedian on a quest to save his marriage, his wife, and eventually his wife’s life. Our hero's journey finds Stanhope cuddling with Johnny Depp in his Los Angeles mansion, receiving some much-needed TLC from Marilyn Manson, and - most daunting - building a new hour of comedy in the rusted-out hellscapes of post-industrial America.

Equal parts love letter, road romp, and harrowing condemnation of the failures of America’s mental health care system, No Encore for the Donkey is a hilarious and heartbreaking account of a man balancing on the edge of damnation. With Bingo in a coma and Trump about to be elected, Stanhope sifts through the ruins of his own personal cataclysm in order to answer the big questions: What does it mean to love someone when you can’t love yourself? What is the point of success if you have no one to share it with? And is the end of the world BYOB?

Doug in an Audible Nutshell

The coarsed gravel voice of too many cigarettes; the storytelling of the beautiful drunk at the end of the well worn bar; the mind of a human being with a sour outlook leaving a sweet taste. You can embrace him or push him away, but he'll always fight your corner.

A cathartic retrospective.

I'd listen to Doug's American Spirit and alcohol addled voice read my dishwasher instructions. So I was intrigued to listen to his latest offering.
Doug's previous audiobooks, covering the death (and life) of his mother and his early days as a comedian were better than brilliant so this had a lot to live up to. It didn't disappoint. If honesty is the best policy then Doug remains the best.
It focuses mainly on 2016, Doug's Annus Horribilis. But rather than being just an exorcism of those 12 months it also feels like a love letter. A love letter to his wife and a love letter to the lucky dip band of merry pranksters that supported him then and now.
Please do yourself a favour and listen to this very relatable snapshot into a very trying year.

Awesome

Huge fan of Doug and the gang. The story filled in so beautifully the background story that was hidden behind the podcasts themselves

Great as expected ! listened to in 2 days !

Have been a fan of Doug Stanhope for a few years now and I can remember the things in the book he talks about.
Burt Kreisher at his house..singing "don't cut your hair" then bingo telling him. the mattoid "drink your drink" bird cloud..really nice to hear Doug give credit to everyone one he values around him.
I hope James Parker likes it too 🙏

Doug's best book yet

I love Doug as a comic however I think his writing is far better than his standup and this in my opinion is his best book to date.

Superb as always

The most honest, talented and original comedian on the planet right now bar none. His third opus is as engaging, funny and heartbreaking as his previous publications and the audio versions absolutely shame his competitors with their authenticity and intimacy. Cheers Stanhope and give my love to Bingo.

So funny i laughed till i cried. So poignant i cried until it was funny. Walking through a year of Doug and Amys life from the inside out was pure pleasure and i cant wait to read it again.

Another brilliant insight into Doug's mind.

Great story, brilliantly told. The only way to improve it would be more Chad Shank.

Rollercoaster

I began expecting a laugh a minute, what I got was so much better. From the depths of despair to laughing out loud, beautifully written and performed.
