About this listen

It starts with a trip to a local amusement park. David Harwood is hoping a carefree day at Five Mountains will help dispel his wife Jan's recent depression, black moods that have led to frightening thoughts of suicide.

Instead, a day of fun with their four-year-old son Ethan turns into a nightmare. When Jan disappears from the park, David's worst fears seem to have come true.

But when he goes to the police to report her missing, terrified that she's planning to take her own life, the facts start to indicate something very different. The park's records show that only two tickets were purchased, David and Ethan's, and CCTV shows no evidence that Jan ever entered the park at all.

Suddenly David's story starts to look suspicious - suspicious enough for the police to wonder if she's already dead, murdered by her husband. To prove his innocence and keep his son from being taken away from him, David is going to have to dig deep into the past and come face to face with a terrible childhood tragedy - but by doing that he could risk destroying everything precious to him.

A good enough thriller

So I recently finished another Linwood Barclay book and loved it so much I had to listen to another so went for this.

The premise was interesting but unfortunately the other book was so good, this felt a bit disappointing comparatively

Great story

This thriller is only 8 hrs and it grabs you from start to finish. Some unexpected twists and turns. Very well narrated.

Good!

Mystery, intrigue and shock, all wrapped up in this story. The narrator was good. Full of twists and turns. Worth a listen!

interesting listen

Nicey paced audiobook, kept my interest to the end. Great for driving or doing the housework too. Didn't think I would be overly keen when I listened to the sample, but good narration.

The intrigue

You could guess the ending before the end before the final page except for the diamond side as that was not mentioned at all throughout the book

Spoiled by actor's performance

Thrilling and suspenseful story. My favourite author and I would love to see the Promise Falls series made for TV. However, I cringe at the actor's performance. The intonation is the same throughout which is irritating and he vastly overdoes the female and children's voices to the point of embarrassing. Fine to do these voices for cartoons but not for serious dramas. He is the worst actor out of all the audiobooks and it spoils the whole series.

Please, for future books, give Jeff Harding some acting lessons - or hire someone else.

Exciting

I couldn't wait to listen to this. I would make an excuse to go for a walk so I could hear the next chapter. Very well read, very good plot. I hope I can find another book as tantalizing.

Another winner from L. Barclay

I have read and listened to a lot of Linwood Barclay books. In some ways the crux of this tory was more obvious however the surrounding aspects of the story still gave depth to the characters and story overall.

The narrator was great making it easy to distinguish between the various characters and gave a very empathetic performance.

It is one of the shorter books I've listened to recently but if you are already a Barclay fan you will enjoy this..
