About this listen

Narrated by actor Jason Flemyng.

The book that defined the cyberpunk movement, inspiring everything from The Matrix to Cyberpunk 2077.

The sky above the port was the colour of television, tuned to a dead channel.

William Gibson revolutionised science fiction in his 1984 debut Neuromancer. The writer who gave us the matrix and coined the term 'cyberspace' produced a first novel that won the Hugo, Nebula and Philip K. Dick Awards, and lit the fuse on the cyberpunk movement.

More than three decades later, Gibson's text is as stylish as ever, his noir narrative still glitters like chrome in the shadows and his depictions of the rise and abuse of corporate power look more prescient every day. Part thriller, part warning, Neuromancer is a timeless classic of modern SF and one of the 20th century's most potent and compelling visions of the future.

Really good. But hard to follow

Loved the overall book. The tone and story.
But if you are going to listen to this. It can get a bit confusing towards the end.
So not something to have on as an easy listen in while doing something else.

better late than never

stunning sci fi debut that still backs a punch 34 years later. my only regret is not engaging at the time as Gibson’s work has so evidently shaped some of the greatest writers of my life.

Great book, good pacing but...

lots of voice-over clips towards the end and throughout. Otherwise this book had me thoroughly enjoying myself.

The origin of Cyberpunk

Probably my all-time favourite book, narrated brilliantly by Jason Fleming. A masterpiece of Cyberpunk literature.
Absolutely timeless.

Great world building

Some amazing world building here, as everyone knows it’s a hugely influential book but it’s interesting hearing the original material and then thinking about all it’s done.

The story was a bit meh though. Characters were pretty simple and uninteresting, the side characters are particularly thin. This does harm the story which is fine but nothing exciting. Some parts were also quite confusing to keep up with (I think it might have been easier reading it in fairness). The narration was not very good, some of the voices were pretty cringeworthy.

Difficult to listen

The first fiction book I really wanted to have physical copy off. It was very hard to understand this story. I kept rewinding it to understand what is happening and still I vague idea what was it about.

One small thing…

Loved listening to this. Great energy in Jason Flemyng’s performance, really brings the narrative to life, but where is Clem Fandango when you need him? It’s “Cheeba”!

An Interesting Shift

First read Neuromancer about 20 years back, and it's just as engaging as it ever was in 2022 - a cyberpunk future that never came true.

The narration was an interesting departure from how the characters would be expected to have spoken, but after years of listening to American narrators it was strangely charming to have a Southern English Case and Molly, Eastern European Armitage, and a Welsh Julius Deane was delightful.

I still recommend it as much as I would have two decades ago.

Incredible

This is my favourite book of all time. Everything about it just gets better with every read/listen. The narrator does a great job of differentiating the characters and portraying this world. It's an incredible story and everyone should experience it at least once.
