Vampires never rest, and neither does Harry Keogh, the world's greatest vampire hunter, the Necroscope, the man who can talk to the dead. Right now, he's desperately searching for his wife and son, who disappeared in the midst of Harry's war against the undead monsters that plague mankind. Others will to carry on that fight until the Necroscope has been reunited with his beloved family.
But it's not that easy to leave the vampire war behind. The bloodsuckers know that the Necroscope is their deadliest enemy and will do anything to destroy him.
Harry struggles to locate his missing family, not realizing that he has become a pawn in the battle between two powerful vampires. When one has slain the other, the Necroscope will be the next to die.

Another Great Part of The Necroscope Story
I must be honest I was sceptical as to how this book would work.
I needn’t have been. It adds to the overall Necroscope story rather than just being an afterthought.
It introduces a number of new characters and sets the scene to open up the world of Vampires. So continuing and expanding our knowledge of Harry.
Joshua Saxon again provides excellent narration.
My only slight issue is what felt like an abrupt ending. But then it paves the way for Part II.

A satisfying conclusion.
It goes without saying that this is in no way any kind of jumping on point and you have to be pretty versed in the events up to this point to get the most out of it, even with Lumley being one of the writers most concerned with recapping events for his audience, typically devoting the first section of any project to getting you up to speed rather than diving right in. But as someone who's been eagerly consuming the Lumley Audiobooks as they come out this was all highly enjoyable stuff.
An honourable mention must as always go to the narrator Joshua Saxon who reads Lumley's work with supreme gusto and gravitas. I know I've said this before but I'm incredibly happy Saxon seems to have been entrusted with Lumley's audiobook legacy as this is probably the finest single example of a Hand-In-Glove match between an authorial and narrating style since Stephen King started reading his own work.
I've enjoyed this diversion along Harry's early journeys and the deeper exploration of the werewolf mythos. I won't go into too much detail for fear of spoilers but if you've been enjoying the first two parts of The Lost Years you'll find this not only wraps up those plot threads neatly but introduces a few memorable new characters in the final stages.
All in all a satisfying end to a meaty tale.

Another Necroscope Classic Perfectly Performed
Necroscope: The Lost Years, Vol. 1 is a return to the style of the first five books in the series after the epic fantasy horror of the Vampire World trilogy. It's set between Wamphyri! and The Source (books 2 & 3) and starts to fill in some of the gaps in the saga. Lumley is one of the most consistently excellent modern horror writers and this volume is another masterclass.
Joshua Saxon taking over the audiobooks is the best thing to happen to Necroscope in years. He is totally perfect for these stories. I've only been listening to audiobooks regularly for just over a year, but Mr Saxon has quickly become my absolute favourite narrator. It is always a pleasure to listen to someone who fully understands the work and clearly puts a lot of attention to detail into their craft.
Another classic from Crossroad Press.
Highly recommend.
