Summary

“For as long as I can remember, whenever I was asked, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ I always gave the same reply: ‘I’m going to play for the Reds. Manchester United. Nobody else matters.'”

Manchester, 1974, and seven-year-old Nicky Welsh is about to set foot in Old Trafford for the first time. This is the beginning of a five-decade love affair with football and a passion for Manchester United that will define Nicky’s life for ever.

My United Road tells the true story of the fan who made it onto the pitch - almost. Signed for Manchester United from school as an apprentice, then a professional, surrounded by legends in the making, Nicky found himself on the cusp of a brilliant football career...which never happened.

By turns humorous and humbling, Nicky’s book is the story of a dream that so nearly came true, and a history of the Reds from the 1970s to the present day, told with passion and wit by someone who saw it from the inside. His story may be personal, but it will mean something to anyone who knows what it means to love your club, who dreams of wearing its shirt, and whose heart has soared and sunk in the stands.

A trip down memory lane

Great book - having gone to the same primary school (4 yrs younger) and being brought up in L/H it was a real trip down memory lane - could have swore that the headteacher at St Raphael’s once read out a holiday postcard in assembly from Nick when they went to Florida (I could be wrong though memory not being what it was) great read and cannot recommend highly enough

My United Road

A must for all United fans. This journey through good times and bad should be a given to all the over paid charlatans
Who currently wear the red shirts and who bring so much pain to those who follow them mouth a gape this last few seasons. This club that is the lifeblood to so many millions of people has been turned into a cash cow for a family of Americans who have no love of its history. This book is another reminder that there are millions of people to whom this club still means every thing!

Come on Welshy!

Didn’t want it to end, hilarious and poignant. One of the best narrations of an audiobook I’ve heard.. especially the pronunciation of ‘sh%#house’. Not only the best book about United, but also the best book about Liverpool (or most accurate). Top marks Welshy:)
