Summary
From the author of the number-one best-selling romance Jake Undone comes a friends-to-lovers story of longing, passion, betrayal, and redemption... with a twist that will rip your heart out. Skylar was my best friend, but I secretly pined for her. One thing after another kept us apart, and I've spent the last decade in fear of losing her forever. First, it was the cancer, but she survived only to face the unthinkable at my hands. Because of me, she left town. For years, I thought I'd never see her again. But now she's back - and living with him. I don't deserve her after everything I've put her through, but I can't live without her. This is my last chance because she's about to make the biggest mistake of her life. I can see it her eyes: she doesn't love him. She still loves me - which is why I have to stop her before it's too late.

Unlikable heroine
This one is difficult to review without giving anything away so there might be a spoiler or two in my review...but considering the story is pretty predictable I doubt it'll be a shocker to anyone. Anyway this book is a first for me, in that its the first time since I started reading romance that I really really hoped the guy will end up with someone else. Loved the male hero, a bit of a walkover at times but he really was a nice guy. However the heroine...honestly I can't find a single thing I liked about her. She was selfish and self absorbed, an absolute coward and thought she always knew best, especially when it came to how others should manage their lives. But the last straw was the moment she told Kevin she loved him while Mitch was there...I can't understand that level of meanness, cowardice and dishonesty and frankly if I had a friend in such a twisted relationship I would tell him to run as fast as he could in the opposite direction. Surviving cancer is not an excuse for poor behaviour, on the contrary you'd think it would teach you what matters in life. She's blaming him for something that happened as a direct result of her own actions...her hurt was her own fault but she's so selfish she just can't see it. He's trying to make up to her for a mistake that wasn't even a mistake in the first place (or at least not one that she should have a right to judge and if she really loved him she would have helped him cope with the consequences) as they were broken up for a whole year before it happened (can't say more or I'll give the story away)! Yes, I know it's just a fictional story but that's the whole point, this is supposed to be an escape from day to day drudge, a romance with flawed but ultimately good characters. And unfortunately there wasn't much good about the heroine and it really spoiled the book for me.
