About this listen
A blisteringly funny, heartbreaking novel about 20-something British Ghanaian Maddie as she grapples with identity, love, loss and becoming the woman she wants to be—for fans of Chewing Gum, Such a Fun Age and Queenie.
Mum calls me Maame. It has many meanings in Twi, but in my case, it means woman.
Meet Maddie.
To her mostly absent mum, she's Maame, the woman of the family. To her dad, she's his carer—even if he hardly recognises her. To her friends, she's the one who still lives at home, who never puts herself first.
It's time to become the woman she wants to be.
The kind who wears a bright yellow suit, says yes to after-work drinks and flirts with a 30-something banker. Who doesn't have to Google all her life choices. Who demands a seat at the table.
But to put ourselves together, sometimes we have to fall apart....
Heartbreaking, sharply funny and achingly relatable, Maame is an irresistibly fresh coming-of-age story with a heroine you'll never forget.

"Honest, warm, heart-breaking and heart-healing. It felt truly modern, yet somehow timeless. I adored it." (Nikki May, author of Wahala)
"A poignant coming-of-age tale about finding strength, hope and courage...Maame's quiet confidence is true to life and liberating." (Lizzie Damilola Blackburn, author of Yinka, Where Is Your Huzband?)

What my soul needed
This books speaks to what a lot of daughters born into an African household go through. The complexity, sadness, grief of experiences missed and fundamental changes to one’s psyche. It also highlights the ease of misunderstandings, secrecy and lack of communication under the guise of respect or maintaining the ‘status quo’. It was a joy to read and exactly what I needed on my journey of self-discovery.
Beautiful writing and narration.

Wholesome character
I liked learning about the life’s journey of a young lady of colour whose experience I completely and utterly related with. Some of the experiences this character shares are things I too experienced so I found it touching and having that shared experience was poignant.

Throughly enjoyed this
Really liked the narrative of loss told from a young persons perspective as the turmoil of life still goes around when things happen. Made me think and see my own past family illness/ loss and how I dealt and still dealing with it. Laugh out loud moments.

Beautiful told story of a mid 20’s Ghanaian girl.
This book is a tale that many can relate to in one way of the other. A poignant depiction of love, grief, pressure, responsibility, mental health and identity. Maddie slowly becomes your best friend in your head and her trials and tribulations makes your feel not so alone in your 20 something angst.

Absolutely loved this relatable story
I had no expectations of this book when I purchased it. I was simply attracted to the title and imagery but I was captivated by the character and delivery. I felt every second of Maddie’s tale. The ups, the downs, the uncertainty and naivety. I loved the nuances and experience many British-Ghanaians or children of the diaspora can relate to. It was a well-written, well-narrated belated coming of age tale.

Such an emotional listen
Such an emotional and raw book! I loved listening to this book and watching Maddy grow and evolve through out the book. Tears, laughter and annoyance all came through and there are so many things I can relate to but I’m just so happy where she got to in the end. Loved it!
