About this listen

My mum wasn't always a twat. But sometime after I turned 10, everything changed. She stopped taking me shopping. She regularly forgot my birthday. And she thought she could heal people.

One girl’s funny and honest account of losing her mum to a cult.

Susan Wokoma performs in this teen-spirited and gangsta-rap-fuelled survival guide to growing up with an actual twat as a mum.

Written by Anoushka Warden, directed by Debbie Hannan and music by The Last Skeptik, this version was produced by Fight in the Dog and Showroom Productions for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2019.

My Mum’s a Twat premiered at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in 2018. It was produced by Royal Court and Amy Powell Yeates.

Short but Sassy and Sweet

I listened to this audiobook while doing my dishes. It helped me get through the chores I like to avoid it had funny parts that I could relate to. I kind of hoped for more, but it was still a decent read.

Enjoyable, but short.

Really enjoyed this book, my only issue is that it is so short. Loved the narrator and style of writing. Whilst I have not been in a similar situation, the way it has been written allows me to easily relate to the character.

Refreshing! Entertaining! Honest!

Susan Wokoma is one of my favourite actresses (since her Chewing gum and Crazyhead days) so naturally when I came cross this audio-book I was excited to sink into it, My Mum's a Twat is an intriguing look at modern cults and the reality of growing up with physically and emotionally vacant parents, the distinct narration of Wokoma serves to highlight the humorous aspects and the daunting reality of Warden's experiences. One thing I found was that the audio-book could have been presented in a more serious way veering more towards dark humor than straightforward narration however considering the length of the audio-book it's not too much a surprise. Overall left wanting to know more with less cynicism and more of a narrative flow.

Enjoyable play of appropriate play length

Is it a short story or a play? I’m getting it wrong so please ignore this part.
Susie Wokoma is a joy to listen to and I enjoyed everyone minute of this story. Written in a relatable way even if I didn’t spend time in Canada.
Thank you Susie thank you Anoushka.

Amazing story

So sad that this actually goes on and people choose these lifestyles over their families

Enjoyed this from start to finish

The story is funny, saddening, interesting, angering and all sorts! I like the fact it was short and punchy and could be listened to in one sitting. The writer’s style of writing is hilarious and it is narrated perfectly!
