Summary

The Brotherhood of the Guardians has existed for thousands of years to serve a single purpose: the protection of Talents, the mortal descendants of the original nine Muses.

Daniel Lyoncourt, 21, has trained his entire life to join the Guardians. Daniel is prepared to risk his life in order to keep his Talent safe, but when he's assigned to 19-year-old Anna Saint-James, he discovers that his life isn't the only thing he could lose. Anna has no idea how special she is and knows nothing about her abilities. He must teach her to control her gifts, keep her safe, and hope that he can find a place in her life as something more than just her bodyguard.

All power comes at a price. Like all Talents, Anna must one day make a choice: lose all of her powers or ascend to a higher plane, leaving behind everyone she loves.

Critic reviews

"Simply put, I loved this book, from start to finish. I loved the characters, the story, the action, the sarcasm, the obscure references to television shows and movies of my youth. There were awwww moments, there were angry moments, and there were moments that were truly laugh out loud. It was a coming-of-age story, a love story, an action-packed roller coaster wrapped up in a neat little package. " (Michele, Book Geeks Unite)

"I wasn’t ready for how fast this book sucked me into its gravitational pull. From page one I was hooked. The author seamlessly draws you into a world where being a Muse can be dangerous. I really enjoyed the storyline and plot of this YA novel; It was different than most of the young adult books out there. I’ve read lots of YA novels and this is one of the best I have read in a long time." (Jessica, Nerd Girl Official)

A great mythological retelling

FEEDBACK
This book was so much more interesting than I thought it was going to be. One of the things I liked about this book was how it started off right away. Daniel is assigned to Anna who is a Talent which means she can influence the people around her. Due to her parents dying, she was put in an orphanage and adopted by a fantastic family. However, this caused her not to know her own powers until Daniel entered her life. After revealing to Anna what she really is, Daniel immediately becomes involved in her life. The events that unfolded in the book were amazing. It just continuously flowed and never stopped. There were a couple of time hops that took me a moment to figure out where I was in the story. But this never lasted long. How much time passed throughout the whole year? I think a year? That’s the only downfall to this book. But it didn’t stop my enjoyment. The story was unique and I loved the twist that was given for Muses.

Muse was told in a dual POV between Daniel and Anna. I really liked the dual POV and felt that it was very successful for this book. Earlier in the book, it is provided that Talent’s are usually self centered and not the nicest people. They know their power and influence and typically use it to become famous. Since Anna’s point of view is given, it is known very early that Anna is not this type of person. I loved Anna’s character. She was a good person and knew exactly what she wanted. Once she figured out how to use her influence, it was so nice to see what she decided to do with it. Daniel was a great character as well. He is immediately drawn to Anna and it’s pretty obvious that their attraction is mutual. Daniel’s protection was just enough. It was nice that he wasn’t portrayed as an over bearing guardian but he was always there to protect her. He was humble and always put others first. I really enjoyed watching their relationship grow and can’t wait to continue their story.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Overall, Muse by Erin McFadden as a very good book. I really enjoyed the twist on the Muse mythology that was presented. The pacing of the book was fantastic even if the time jumps were a little ambiguous. I always wanted to continue with the story and was excited when I was able to pick it back up again. Daniel and Anna were fantastic characters to follow. I really liked both of their personalities and how they were portrayed. These are two characters I immediately got behind and wanted them to succeed. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a great read with some mythological aspects.

AUDIO REVIEW
NOTE: The narration does not affect my rating of the book
I really liked this narration. Leanna Abbott did a fantastic job narrating this whole book. During Daniel’s chapters she deepened her voice so it was very clear who the POV was. I do think this would have been a little more successful if it was in a dual narration but I cannot deny that Leanna did wonderfully. I would definitely recommend this audiobook.

Myth & Romance for YA

Muse is a thrilling and well-written fantasy geared toward young adults but can be enjoyed by all ages. The storyline is incredibly entertaining, exciting, and action-packed, infused with loads of mythology and magical characters. The plot flowed smoothly, immediately I understood the premise and was plunged in the story. The characters are especially appealing, interesting, and well-developed with depth to their personalities. The romance portion is tastefully done, charming, and age-appropriate.

Leanna Abbott did a fabulous job narrating this audiobook; I thoroughly enjoyed her performance. Overall, this was an enjoyable listen, and I would definitely listen to the second book in the series.

Well written with complex storyline. It was easy to fall in love with these characters, especially our hero who would do anything to keep his charge safe even assign her to another.
Leanna did an excellent job bringing these characters to life.

Musings about a Muse

I knew this book would be good. It was not good it was great. Wow. I truly got sucked in until the very end. It felt like no time had passed. This book is well written, the characters and the world is richly described. The narration was really amazing. You felt like a movie was just playing in your head. I cannot believe how very much I enjoyed this story. Leanna Abbott had an outstanding performance.
