Summary

Eerie violin music, flashing lights, a battered security guard, a dead music teacher...more than Susan Wiles bargained for when she flew to Florida to meet her newly found birth mother, Audrey Roberts, for the first time.

Audrey is in charge of Hemingway High School for the Performing Arts, a tony private school in Banyan Beach, Florida. The bad publicity surrounding the school jeopardizes its existence when donors threaten to withhold funding and parents begin withdrawing their students.

Lucky for Audrey, Susan happens to be a retired music teacher and an amateur sleuth extraordinaire. Against the wishes of Susan’s detective daughter who has accompanied her on the trip, Susan volunteers to substitute for the dead choral teacher and uses her new position to work on solving the case.

You can't keep a good mystery private

I really enjoyed this book. This book continues on from the previous book (Murder in the middle, which is just as good as this book) but it is a totally different story and can be listened to as a standalone. I would recommend that you listen to the series in order because it helps with the continuity or backstory of the characters and well, they are just great mysteries. The characters are fun and I like the new dynamic the additions to the family brought to the book and whether Susan can trust even her own family members. We were also treated to a nice trip to Disney land to add to the clues and cuteness of the book. The mystery was interesting and I like the way the author keeps you guessing over two or three motives for the murder and then supplies you with plenty of suspects to wonder about. The hours just flew by and kept me listening until the end. Can't wait for the next book.

Susan was upset when her newly found mother told her she didn't want her to come and visit but after her brother convinces her that her mother, Audrey, needs her help, Susan, her daughter and granddaughter find themselves on a plane heading to Florida. Before she can even say "Hi, I am your daughter" the music teacher at her mothers school is found murdered. Susan as a retired music teacher has no problems stepping into the position to help out, it also puts her in the perfect place to ask questions about the murder teacher. Something isn't right at the school strange lights have been seen coming from rooms that aren't used, a security guard is attacked and a young girl nearly does from a drug overdose. Can Susan teacher the students well enough the put on the weekly show at a local nursing home? Or will she get distracted by the strange characters passing packages between themselves? Could the teachers murder be drug related? Or more personal, like her abusive husband who just found out she was seeing somebody else? Susan also has to battle her own feeling as she gets to know her mother and brother better as they all try to save the reputation of the boarding school, by catching a killer.
I wasn't sure I liked the narrator that much, she was okay but nothing special, however over the course of the two books she has grown on me and I actually got use to the voices she used and quite liked her.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Retirement is Bliss?

No matter what Susan Wyles does or where she goes, she always seems to run into dead bodies and that doesn’t let up even when she goes to meet her biological mother Audrey in Florida. When Susan, Lynette and Anna Lise said down in Florida her newly discovered brother brings her to meet her biological mother Audrey, but before they can even exit the car. They see police and a shaken Audrey. The music teacher at the school Audrey is director of has been murdered. Susan being a retired music teacher takes her place in to the chagrin of Lynette and her family back in New York. She also tries to solve the murder. I love Susan while books and all the books by this author. I think you found the perfect narrator as you know The difference between each character. So kudos to Diane Weiner and Emma spears for coming together to make the perfect audiobook. I highly recommend these books and can’t wait for each new one. Please forgive any grammatical or punctuation or errors as I am blind and dictate my reviews, but all opinions are my own and authentic.
