Summary

It's 1943 and the country is at war. An unlikely group of land girls are finding out about life, love and loss, forming surprising friendships along the way.

When Alice Todd's husband runs off with another woman, she is forced to find a means to provide for herself and her young son. Accepting a position as a hostel warden at an old Devonshire farmhouse, Alice finds herself looking after ten volunteer land girls. The job is not as easy as it first seems. Not only does Alice have to deal with the uncompromising farm owner, but as her young charges arrive at the farm she discovers every girl has a story - and some have rather dark secrets.

Entertaining & well written

An entertaining book about lives of landgirls and a land army warden living in a hostel at Lower Post Stone Farm in 1943. The story revolves around the 'Post Stone Girls' and the other characters who live and work at the Farm. Their individual stories interweave into an account of one year in the lives of very different people brought together by the war.
Although I enjoyed this undemanding book, I was a little disappointed by the end which left the story hanging. I later discovered that there is a sequel; 'The Girl at the Farmhouse Gate', which I will review separately. Rather than being a complete book in itself, this feels a bit like half a book, which continues with the sequel. The resulting two volumes are a bit long winded and the second book is very repetative. It might have been better to combine the two books and edit the result.
Having said that it is a worthwhile and well written book to listen to and I did enjoy it.

Muddy boots, wonder title good listen.

A well read and lovely story. Easy to listen to, good descritions particularly the result of stress on fighter pilots in the 2nd W. War. Would recommend this title as a 5 star.

A Shame

I was a bit disappointed with this book. Don't get me wrong, the narration is excellent and the setting is perfect for great story. However, there were so many characters, that the writer didn't quite go into enough detail. You never really knew what the characters were thinking, or how they felt. The book was just a lot of descriptions of what the characters were doing. Considering this was set during a war, you never really got a sense of it. Sorry, it was dull.
