'Highly atmospheric and tense' Richard Osman
From the bestselling author of The Familiars and The Foundling comes Stacey Halls' most compelling and ambitious novel to date.
'Something's not right here.'
I was aware of Mr Booth's eyes on me, and he seemed to hold his breath. 'What do you mean?'
'In the house. With the family.'
West Yorkshire, 1904. When newly graduated nurse Ruby May takes a position looking after the children of Charles and Lilian England, a wealthy couple from a powerful dynasty of mill owners, she hopes it will be the fresh start she needs. But as she adapts to life at the isolated Hardcastle House, it becomes clear there's something not quite right about the beautiful, mysterious Mrs England.
Distant and withdrawn, Lilian shows little interest in her children or charming husband, and is far from the 'angel of the house' Ruby was expecting. As the warm, vivacious Charles welcomes Ruby into the family, a series of strange events forces her to question everything she thought she knew. Ostracised by the servants and feeling increasingly uneasy, Ruby must face her demons in order to prevent history from repeating itself. After all, there's no such thing as the perfect family - and she should know.
Simmering with slow-burning menace, Mrs England is a portrait of an Edwardian marriage, weaving an enthralling story of men and women, power and control, courage, truth and the very darkest deception. Set against the atmospheric West Yorkshire landscape, Stacey Halls' third novel proves her one of the most exciting and compelling new storytellers of our times.

Excellent, engaging and well researched novel - if you are a fan of Stacey Halls, you won't be disappointed. Beautifully performed and once again, so wonderful to listen to historical novels featuring working class heroines.

Absolutely Brilliant
Wow what a story, in fact two stories in one. This is the first book which I have listened to written by Stacey Halls and I will be looking for another one immediately! It was wonderful and read so well by Imogen Wilde about the lives of two women of different backgrounds - one the mistress of the house and the other the children’s nurse. I thought it was marvellous!

Stacey Halls does it again
Looking for a gritty, Northern heroine with a back story? Stacey Halls is your girl once again. Ruby May and Mrs England have their own secrets but not all men are as bad as each other. Read really well by Imogen Wilde and a fantastic listen - it was quite predictable but that didn't stop my enjoyment!

Great read
I really enjoyed this book. I got through it so fast.
I loved the writer's descriptive language, some of the ways she described certain things got me.
it's an easy book to read with enough intrigue and plot to make you curious for answers

Good listen!
The story was interesting and you get drawn into the protagonist’s world very quickly . The darkness is understated by the naive but sparky children’s nurse and so more thrilling .. you are suspicious of Mr England from early on but not quite sure why.. The narration grates a little in the beginning as you get used to the accent and way of reading but soon becomes very easy and enjoyable. Great suspense and build up at the end .. would recommend.

Another excellent, gripping story
Whatever context or historical period the novels of Stacey Halls are placed within, the storytelling is outstanding. This is no exception. Believable and loveable characters, outstanding attention to detail and sense of place brilliantly evoked. Gripping plot. Highly recommend for a great listen at the winter hearth. Loved it.

Absorbing and atmospheric
I found this a thoroughly absorbing and engaging audiobook. I often struggle to connect with an American accent and so this was a breath of fresh air. I think Imogen provides an excellent narration and, as someone who is relatively local to Birmingham, thought it was well executed. (FYI, this is not read in a monotone or dull voice and accent snobs should broaden their horizons somewhat)
The story itself was meticulously written. This was my first Stacey Halls book but it certainly won’t be the last. The language used was fitting and beautiful and the atmosphere she created with all the secrets tucked just out of sight was perfectly done. Highly recommend.
