About this listen
FNH Audio presents an unabridged reading of Mr Standfast.
In this thrilling adventure, Richard Hannay the star of The Thirty-Nine Steps and Greenmantle, returns to continue his personal battle against the enemies of Great Britain during the Great War.
The war on the continent is raging. The German hordes are pushing the allies back into their trenches, the line is barely holding, and it's at this moment that Richard find himself pulled out of the lines for special duty.
Going against everything Hannay believes in, he finds himself working undercover infiltrating a pacifist organisation. This group is not all it seems to be, as behind the pacifist masks there are German spies and saboteurs.

Indifferent narration spoiled a classic adventure
The narrator's voice simply wasn't suited to portray an adventure story. some dreadful pronunciation, particularly of place names really set my teeth on edge.

Shame
This wonderful story has been ruined by a narrator who can neither read nor speak English. The constant mispronunciations were such a complete distraction that I struggled to finish listening.
Shame on Audible for allowing such a travesty on their site.

Midscast
The reader is actually quite talented but he doesn’t sound like Hanney and his relentless mispronunciations of foreign words are wearisome.

Good story, mixed performance
Good story - though it makes war sound like any other job, rather than the bloodbath it was in the trenches.
Performance is very good when it is English, but toe-curlingly poor with the German, French and Italian phrases and names. The German secret phrases are central to the story but pronounced so poorly that they are unintelligible to the listener. The reader even manages to pronounce the German article ‘die’ (pronounced as ‘dee’ in German) like the English ‘dye’. The general who is the protagonist of this story told in the first person, understands German. The reader should have reflected that by at least making it intelligible. As it is, producers did not even consult a German speaker or even anyone with passable German. Shame for a story whose plot revolves around secret German phrases.
