About this listen

A mysterious island.

An abandoned orphanage.

A strange collection of very curious photographs.

It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that makes for a thrilling listening experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets 16-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow - impossible though it seems - they may still be alive.

A spine-tingling fantasy, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.

Mostly excellent

What made the experience of listening to Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children the most enjoyable?

The most enjoyable part is the writing. The delivery when set in US was fine (for a children's book.) The story itself is really good.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children?

The most memorable moment was realising the reader was modeling his WELSH accent on Dick Van Dyke's cockney in Mary Poppins

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Jesse Bernstein?

Gosh, anyone who has even a faint grasp of accents. It would have been better to carry on with his representation of an American Teen (apparently whiney) throughout, instead of trying to do such a dreadful massacre of speech. It was literally painful to listen to what sounded like someone making fun of learning disabilities! If only his 'Welsh' accent was on the sample, I could have saved some money!

Any additional comments?

Such a shame he chose to try an accent. It totally spoiled the experience.

Hard to enjoy with the cringe-worthy accents

Would you try another book written by Ransom Riggs or narrated by Jesse Bernstein?

I would definitely like to try another book in this series but I can not manage another one narrated by Jesse Bernstein! I have checked the other books in this series and thankfully they have a different narrator.

What did you like best about this story?

I love the mystical setting and magical atmosphere.

How could the performance have been better?

An english narrator, or even just someone that doesn't sound like an extra from Mary Poppins!

Did Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children inspire you to do anything?

To avoid books read by Jesse Bernstein!

Any additional comments?

The story was really good but the whole way through I found myself literally cringing at the terrible attempt at English/Welsh accents. It made the book really hard to listen to. I don't understand why this wasn't narrated by an English person. The accents were so bad that they were almost insulting. It was like being read to by a Dick Van Dyke impersonator, and not in a good way! Thankfully, after checking the other books in the series, I have seen that they are narrated by someone else. Hopefully they won't butcher the accents like Jesse Bernstein did.

Terrible narrator.

Good story but nearly gave up listening due to the terrible narrator. He made the peculiar children and headmisstress sound like a sarcastic Homer Simpson. Very off putting.

Very good book... unsure about narrator

After watching the film, the book is always better. I’m really enjoying the storyline but the narrator is putting me off slightly. I understand the main character is American but his attempt at accents anything other than American is terrible. I’ve never heard an American do a believable English accent and this isn’t an exception. He’s very good at keeping the story going and enjoyable but his character voices are poor.

Gripping

Good book. Boring narrator, all of the children sounded the same and didn't sound like children at all! I would definitely request a different narrator but a really good book! 😂🍍

I love the book!

I love the book but it's a shame about the strange reading of the children's accents! The attempt of the British and Welsh accents just weren't great unfortunately. It took a bit of getting used to but I love this book so persevered. Gave 3 stars for the overall book as the story is great!

Gave up

The narration, especially the dialogue , was too poor. A particular lowlight was the accents of the locals on the Welsh island; I can only assume that the narrator had never heard a Welsh accent and failed to do any research either. The story had more potential, but in the end the narrative quality just became too much to bear.

Great story

I really enjoyed the book. The narrater was awful. The accents were weird and the storytelling was not believable. If it was read by a different person then it would be perfect. Getting past that the book was very addictive and sometimes left me at the edge of my seat
