It is a truth universally acknowledged, that every good mystery is in need of a brilliant sleuth...

Welcome to Hampshire, 1795, where a young Jane Austen has her sights set on securing a marriage proposal from the dashing Tom Lefroy at a local ball.

But when a shocking discovery is made - a milliner's lifeless body tucked away in a linen closet - Jane finds herself embroiled in an unexpected murder mystery.

As she races against the clock to clear her beloved brother Georgy's name, Jane uses her sharp wits to navigate the treacherous waters of society, unmasking secrets and unearthing hidden motives along the way. With every twist and turn, Jane's determination to solve the case deepens. And if she fails, her brother will face the ultimate punishment - the hangman's noose...

Join Jane on her quest for justice as she faces down danger, deceit, and scandal amidst her own friends and neighbours. Will she uncover the truth in time, or will the real killer go free? One thing's for certain - in Hampshire, nothing is as it seems...

Critic reviews

Richly imagined and wonderfully plotted - a great read (S.J. Bennett)
Sharp and energetic whilst simultaneously warm and heartfelt. This is a delicious treat for fans of Austen's novels and delightfully compelling mysteries (B P Walter)
Exceptional - the Austen whodunnit I feel like I've been waiting my whole life for! The historical detail was rich and impeccable with gorgeously drawn characters, all the twists and turns you want from a murder mystery and an increidbly striking Austen voice. I loved it! (Sophie Irwin)

Terrible narrator

This was a good book totally picking up on the style of Jane Austen’s writing, but marred by the deadpan narration. The narrator sounded like she was reading the shipping forecast rather than a take of intrigue. I wish I’d read it on my Kindle instead of listening to it on Audible as I could’ve enjoyed it in the way it deserved.

Utterly brilliant!

Firstly Jessica Bull is a fantastic writer! She fully placed her novel in the Regency era, incorporating lovely details of daily regency life, with truths about Jane Austen and her family whilst enhancing the facts with gorgeous descriptions and a mystery that keeps you guessing. I can’t wait to read more by her!

The narration by Mia McKenna-Bruce was brilliant too. Her voice lent the story a lovely feel that made you want to keep on listening. She is a joy!

This had the potential to be good but….

I really wanted to like this story but I’m sorry to say that it was absolutely dire. The storyline such as it is, drags its feet one agonising step after the other, drowning in the minutiae of inconsequential fluff. Even the narrator sounded too bored to bother modulating her monotone voice. The plot has all the makings of a good Scooby Doo cartoon (spoiler alert- the baddie dunnit!) Don’t waste your money or more importantly your time on this one.
