A Vogue, Vulture, Time Magazine, Observer and LitHub BEST AUTUMN BOOK
From the brilliant mind of the creator and star of I May Destroy You and Chewing Gum comes a passionate declaration against fitting in.
Michaela Coel's MacTaggart Lecture touched a lot of people with her striking revelations about race, class and gender. But in the end, the person most impacted was Coel herself. Building on this speech, Misfits immerses listeners in her deeply personal vision through powerful allegory and anecdotes - from her East London upbringing to her discovery of theatre and love for storytelling.
With inspiring insight and wit, she tells of her reckoning with trauma and metamorphosis into a champion for herself, inclusivity and radical honesty, and in telling her journey invites us to reflect on our own. By embracing our differences, she says, we can transform our lives. An artist to her core, Coel holds up the path of the creative as an emblem of our need to regard one another with care and respect - and transparency.
Misfits is a triumphant call for honesty, empathy and inclusion. This timely, necessary book is a rousing coming-to-power manifesto dedicated to anyone who has ever worried about fitting in.

Loved it
I was introduced to Michaela Coel through Womans Hour on R4. I don't know how I've failed to come across her before! Her voice and her words, her responses on Womans Hour made me listen up and fall in love. I am so glad she wrote this book and recorded it.
I've since watched an episode of Chewing Gum. Hysterical, and brilliant!
Michaela's delivery, in every sense, of her experiences, processing and growth to where and who she is now, leave me in awe, thoughtful and grateful.

Amazing Intricate Perspective Changing
I’m bad with physical books and reading, so big up for the audio book. Michaela Coel obz narrates this captivatingly (heart eyes emoji)
The poetry and imagery I’m this book is beautiful. We are so lucky to have such an honest, courageous and witty artist in this generation, who is willing share her lessons with us.
Up there with the legends. She knows how to move me. Big love and highly recommend to any one working in the arts, tv, theatre, publishing, dropped out of uni or anything, male, female, non binary, trans, if you like books, if you ever made a piczo, if you often make food that has strong smells, if you’re studying, if you’re having a Saturn return right now, if you’ve ever written something and never shared it… I think you might like this. I did anyway. Xxx

Compelling
I really enjoyed listening to Michaela reading her own words and telling her own truths in her own voice. As personal as this becomes, her journey is also relatable and inspiring, especially for fellow misfit creatives. A powerful tale from one of our most exciting storytellers.

Outstanding
I generally dislike spending a precious credit on a short listen. But this listen was outstanding. Perhaps surprisingly I bought this without having seen Cole’s work- Having decided it might be too triggering for me. But this talk was crafted so beautifully I don’t see how I can now not sit down to watch both pieces I know to be available to me.
What a talented writer. And how beautifully paced this piece was.

Excellent. That’s all.
Absolutely excellent, beautifully written, courageously honest and as always, articulately delivered. I couldn’t stop listening once I started and I finished it in one sitting. Very much recommended.

The only book needed to understand "Privilege"
The smooth eloquence of Coel's narrative through her journey through her own awakening to "privilege" is found in its simplicity. This is the book that everyone should read to really understand what privilege is, what it is to be a part of a demographic that mis-fits the norms and conventions of society and how this was experienced 1st hand by one of Britain's most gifted creators.

Honest and funny
This is a great story about the media industry and its flaws. Honest without any hint of being patronising, thoughtful and very strong.
