About this listen

'[An] honest and courageous book' Mike Brearley
'Engrossing...it looks back and thinks ahead, jumps between wit and woe' Lawrence Booth, Mail on Sunday
Following the critical and commercial success of Absolutely Foxed, Graeme Fowler returns with a stunning new book that takes the reader inside the mental side of cricket.

Few sports can be played as much in the mind as cricket. When bowlers are hurling the ball down at your head at 90 mph, or fielders are crowded round the bat waiting to snap up an edge, only the most resilient can thrive. In Mind Over Batter, former Test batsman, commentator and coach Fowler looks into all facets of the game to assess the mental aspect of cricket. What is mental strength? And how can you improve it, or why do some people suddenly lose it? Can the environment in a dressing room have any impact on both mental strength and mental health? When a game builds up to a dramatic climax - how do you train yourself to cope? Can pressure really lead to catastrophic decision-making and even lead players to bend the rules?

Told with his familiar mix of brilliant insight, hilarious anecdotes and moving personal experience of his own mental demons, Fowler delivers a superb portrait of the game. Mind Over Batter will not only shed light on the top echelons of cricket, but it will also provide the reader with many useful ideas on how they can improve their own game and performance - in cricket or in other walks of life. Finally, having resisted for many years despite his own mental health issues, Fowler decides to take a closer look inside his own mind and for the first time undergoes therapy to see if he can work out what makes him tick. What he discovered surprised even him.©2019 Graeme Fowler (P)2019 Simon & Schuster UK

Critic reviews

'Engrossing...it looks back and thinks ahead, jumps between wit and woe' (Lawrence Booth)
'Unlike so many autobiographies, there's humour and genuine insight... For a former Test opener, Fowler is not afraid to play his shots.' (Huw Turbervill)

Fantastic from Foxy

While I enjoy a good cricket biography, rich in anecdotes it is rare that the mindset of those involved in the stories is analysed and discussed. This extra dimension makes it an important document on mental health, all told with the now trademark warmth and humour that Graeme Fowler brought to Absolutely Foxed.

Ok

Not bad!
I did find some chapters a bit tedious, especially the OCD on cricket equipment. Graeme came across as likeable on occasions, but often I'd find him irritating, much the same as those around him I think. Worth a listen though!

Inspirational

A great follow up to Absolutely Foxed and a really brilliant insight into the mindset of not just a top cricketer but a really complex human being and what it takes to succeed not only on the field but off it, as well. Can't recommend highly enough.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

Typical northern nuggety anti establishment individual. Funny and profound in equal measure. Wish there was more from Foxy on Audible. Brilliant narrator. Must have been great to be in his team.

Absolutely brilliant

I totally loved it, maybe it's because I'm an opening batter, maybe because I love the game, maybe it's because I too have suffered from depression. Also great impressions by Fowler:)

Foxy delivers the goods again

As a kid Graeme Fowler was always one of my favourite cricketers - flamboyant and unorthodox in his approach but always entertaining. Really enjoyed reading his first book - Absolutely Foxed but have got to say that this one is even better. Would especially recommend the audiobook for the hilarious tales from the Lancashire dressing room and the flawless Jack Simmons impressions.

Exceptional entertainment from an exceptional man

As a cricketer, this book is a must. Full of tales and legend. As a sufferer of mental illness, this book gives an insight into how to start coping. Brilliant.

Best cricket book for years

Well done to Foxy. As well as being a brilliant book for looking at himself and being cathartic it is expert in giving insight to to rop performing batsman and the way he simplifies thought processes as a cricketer is inspiring and, as a player myself, Incredibly useful
