About this listen

A heart-pounding brand-new release from an international best-selling author.

Nightmares are real in the cold dark waters of the deep.

National security agent Cade Rearden is used to secrets. Assigned to protect the ultra-dark organization known as The Cove Project, he grapples with his role of defending a country still in crisis after a deadly super AI has devastated much of the US.

But when part of his team mysteriously disappears beneath the idyllic waters of the Caribbean, Cade finds himself thrust into a web of lies and mystery, at the heart of which lies an eons-old secret that somebody will kill to protect.

Grappling with his inner demons and struggling to locate his friends, Cade stumbles upon a government cover-up...and terrifying creatures hidden miles beneath the surface of the ocean. This is the Midnight Zone. Where deadly super-organisms rise from the crushing abyss.

In a desperate race against time, Cade must unravel the truth with the help of Cove’s brilliant computer Doris and discover what happened to his friends. But his search soon puts him in the cross-hairs of a ruthless cabal - one that will stop at nothing to stay hidden and preserve what they have created.

Dive into this gripping techno-thriller where Bond meets Cthulhu in a pulse-pounding thrill ride of adventure. Perfect for fans of H.P Lovecraft, Tom Clancy, Ian Fleming, and Lee Child, you won’t want to miss Midnight Zone.

"Sometimes, it stares back."

According to the end notes by the author, J.K.Framks, part of the profits from this book will go to marine charities to help protect the ocean's health. It is the second in the Cade Rearden series, and a techno thriller, almost 17 hours in length, and again performed by Lee Strayer.

Unlike it's predecessor, State of Chaos, which introduced the reader to the super AI, Doris, and the small group of children and, later, other adults who assisted her in the defence against st a less benign intelligence, Janus, Midnight zone takes the reader into underwater mysteries. But a no less serious threat has emerged from the oceans and this time Cade Rearden takes central stage in this life and death struggle for humanity, with able assistance, of course, from Doris, one of her subsidiaries, Dee, human friends and futuristic equipment, a story which starts with the real life 1967 attack on a small environmental research ship, the USS Liberty by Israeli agents. Fast action, terrifying beauty and human emotion combine with almost available technology to make this a thrilling, if exhausing, read.

The book is also well written, with believable dialogue, and excellently read by Lee Strayer, whose only fault seems to be the occasional, if continued, strange pronunciation of, for example, the word primer as 'primmer'.

My thanks to the rights holder of Midnight Zone, who, at my request, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy of the book via Audiobook Boom. I struggled a little with some of the technical explanations but otherwise enjoyed (can this be the correct word for so much apocalyptic mahem?) the whole presentation immensely, and recommended it to anyone who likes end-of-the-world scenario techno thrillers and I look forward to future Cade Rearden stories. A good read.
