About this listen
An intelligent and entertaining exploration of this notoriously unsettled region.
The Middle East is notoriously complex and difficult. This compact book on the topic by the University of Oxford's leading expert does not shirk the challenge. Organised thematically, and dealing with all the pivotal issues in the region, from oil and religion to gender and conflict, this comprehensive primer is both easy-to-read and full of insight. Stuffed with historical background, real-life examples, profiles of key figures from Nasser to Gadaffi, and even popular jokes from the area, The Middle East: A Beginner’s Guide will captivate tourists, students, and the interested general reader alike.

Leading expert on the Middle East Philip Robins, of Oxford, presents his subject in plain terms. Narrator Aspal's patient voice will be a listener's guide while she seeks to build a more nuanced understanding of this part of the world.
Robins takes care to clarify common misconceptions about this diverse region of the world and its too-often stereotyped reputation, going into detail about geography, cultural customs, religious diversity, and political hardship. At this moment in history it is more essential than ever to understand the region. Whether you are planning to visit the Middle East and are wanting to be informed, or whether you just feel like you'd like to learn more, this book is a good place to begin.

Very informative easy listening. The narrator's voice can be a little robotic sounding but overall a worthwhile listening experience.
