About this listen

The Metro books have put Dmitry Glukhovsky in the vanguard of Russian speculative fiction alongside the creator of Night Watch, Sergei Lukyanenko. A year after the events of Metro 2033, the last few survivors of the apocalypse, surrounded by mutants and monsters, face a terrifying new danger as they hang on for survival in the tunnels of the Moscow Metro. Featuring blistering action, vivid and tough characters, claustrophobic tension and dark satire, the Metro books have become bestsellers across Europe.

Same feel, less story

It's nice to be back in the world of Metro, but the story definitely wasn't as compelling in this edition. Still throughly enjoyable but lacking some of the depth, intrigue and fright that Metro 2033 instilled so well.

Not for me

Took a while to get through this one. A slow burner. Can't say it's my type of literature for audio. May have got more out of it if I had read a physical copy.

Mutation

Metro 2034 gets a lot of stick and I'm not entirely sure why. We drop Artyom's story for something much shorter, with mostly new characters, and this might be where a lot of people take issue. To me this book just adds more colour and life to the Metro. It does it at a much swifter pace to Metro 2033, which was a little ponderous at times.

That book explored the various political and religious ideologies of the Metro, as well as Artyom's own developing beliefs. Metro 2034 deals with the more human side of the Metro, the despair and guilt of the old, the hope and forgiveness in the young. This is also a more outright horror than its predecessor, dealing with more of the literal and figurative monsters of the Metro. It's also more gory, violent and depressing, which is nice.

This is a dirtier, crueler Metro. There's more of a dystopian feel inside the tunnels, more squaller and human misery on display. There's something a little too clean about Artyom's journey through the Metro.

I did occasionally struggle with the lengthy, internal monologues that the main characters regularly have. There's more philosophical and spiritual nonsense on display than there was inside Artyom's head. It can be confusing and frustrating to read. Metro 2033 is better written and has a more coherent story, with better world building. I'd still thoroughly recommend 2034 though, even if it is just a setup for the next book in the series.

A rambling story that didn't seem to go anywhere

Very disappointing story after such a well written first book, was expecting a lot more. Felt like it must have been written hastily to capitalise on the success of the first book as the plot felt dragged out and didn't seem to have a coherent resolution or point to the whole thing.

Grim but riveting at times

A lot more polished than the first book and definitely the best in the series. Doesn't seem as disjointed and doesn't lean towards the philosophical side as much.

Another great one!

I love the series!!! Basing on the first book, my expectations for the second were high. And it did reached them. Great book, great author, great narrator.

Confusing to start, but comes together really nicely

At first I did find the story kind of al over the place. I would have expected Artyom to feature as a main character but he only makes a few brief appearances. As the story went on and I got to know the other characters, I really enjoyed the story. Because of artyoms brief appearances and how al the characters individual stories all come together, I really feel like this is more a prequel to the next book rather than a sequel to 2033, although I’m yet to read 2035. For anyone who struggles at the start to stay invested I the story I would say stick it out you won’t regret it. Outstanding storytelling from Degas as per
