Workplace Mental Health in Layman’s Terms

James Routledge has a great a way of bringing mental health into the conversation, I knew this prior to picking up his book based off his social media influence. This book is for anyone who has an interest in mental health in particular a desire to be a workplace mental health advocate and gives it’s readers a base level understanding of how to approach the subject matter within the confines of the working environment.

James has worked along side some great brands and is proactive in sharing his experience with mental health and the reasons for launching his company Sanctus and this book. Although a disclaimer in the book indicates that’s the guidance set out is non clinical or commercially led but more along the lines of personal experience I would of liked the book to have provided more insight into workplace strategy backed by some clinical outcomes rather than personal endeavour.

I particularly liked the journal entry ideas that are layered throughout the book and agree that if you’re to bring the conversation of mental health into the workplace you are required to reflect on your own situation and be proactive in managing this effectively.

I feel the book wasn’t inclusive enough in a broader term, case studies come from a range of enterprise sized companies with large turnovers and employee head counts. Mental health affects different demographics in different ways and i felt that this book was targeted to a specific demographic. White straight men and women.

I started off by reading the book and felt that I couldn’t resonate with it on a page, so I opted to finish of the book via audio, this was better option as I was able to gauge James’s passion of the industry and subject matter a whole lot more.

Overall it was an easy read and great way to get the ball rolling.

I’ve recently gifted it and would recommend the audio version to anyone.
