About this listen
Critic reviews
"You would think that writing the complete works of Sherlock Holmes would be the accomplishment of a lifetime. Think again. In this autobiography, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle describes an incredibly adventuresome and full life, of which the authorship of his famous stories was only a small part....Whitfield offers a smooth and professional reading of this exciting book." (Kliatt)

Needs editing.
Obviously no one who is in a position to edit this audio has listened to it. It repeats parts over and can be very annoying.
Story very good and read well.

Shame about the 'Holmes' narrator
Conan Doyle was a big, sporty adventurous man who met life head-on and achieved a remarkable amount within his lifetime, a lot of which is recounted here. He also retained his Scottish accent to the end of his life. So I find it sad that the publishers deliberately chose a narrator with a 'Sherlockian', intellectual, humourless English voice to read this vivid account of his life. Poor old Doyle - he can't get away from his famous creation even here. It ruined the book for me.
Besides that, this recording is full of editing mistakes with sentences repeated, Part 2 being particularly bad. Altogether an unsatisfactory purchase.

Shame about the repetitions
Robert Whitfield does a good job with this interesting period piece, but as other reviewers have mentioned, the editing is appalling. There's barely a chapter that's free from repetitions and retakes which should never have made it into the final version.
