About this listen

Hitler is marching across Europe. When the book begins, war is only a rumor. Mary Rosie enjoys the excitement the influx of young servicemen bring to the area, especially one charismatic RAF pilot, to the dismay of Johnny, the boy who expects to marry her. When the first bomb strikes her home town, Mary is catapulted into the grim realities of war. A grim discovery on the beach changes her life forever.

Circumstances have changed, and, against her mother's wishes, Mary joins the WAAF. Meanwhile, France has capitulated. Johnny Allan’s regiment has been annihilated. Somehow, he has to survive in war-torn France, and get home to the girl who no longer waits for him. Liesel, a German Jew who lost her family to the Nazis, struggles to adapt to life in Britain. Her desire for revenge on the nation that has stripped her of all she holds dear, affects decisions that puts her life in danger. Their lives become entangled in a way that no one could have envisaged. A story about war, family ties, love, loyalty and loss.

Lovely book

Enjoyed this book very much, well written with a good pace to it. Following the main characters through the war, and the effects it had on them. Would have prefered a Scottish narrator but highly recommend.

Brilliant narration and relatable characters

Though this story involves romance, it’s more about how the Second World War ripped apart families, communities, and whole countries. This is both a heart-wrenching and heartwarming tale, which shows the kindness of strangers as well as the frailty of humanity.

The narrator has a relaxing, rhythmic voice and does the many different accents wonderfully. Though the ending wasn’t what I’d prefer for me, it tied off all the multiple threads and wrapped things up nicely.

I highly recommend this listen, and it gets a strong five stars from me.

Many thanks to Isabella Stroma for a free ARC of this great audiobook.
