Critic reviews

‘Patrick’s early life is a Dickensian tale of domestic violence and misfortune, transformed by chance and some good folk into the actor internationally admired and loved. He writes as well as he acts, with insight, truth and passion. Another Stewart Triumph!’ (Sir Ian McKellen)
‘There is so much to say about Sir Patrick. He is an amazing actor, great to look at, really funny and up for anything. He is a kind man… compassionate and sensitive…. but, as you will find when you read the book, his greatest asset as a human being is the fact that he is so completely and unapologetically himself’ (Whoopi Goldberg)
‘I read this book in a state of wonder, not just for the author’s gifts as a nuanced storyteller and sharp observer, but for those other remarkable gifts, of intelligence, sensitivity, wit, intuition, self-awareness and élan that were bestowed on him when he came into the world – all of which he has freely shared with us so long and so beautifully; and finished reading in a state of deep gratitude for the gifts, and the gift, of Patrick Stewart’

(Michael Chabon)
‘What a glorious memoir Sir Patrick Stewart has written. His prose is elegant and beautiful, diamond-like in its clarity and precision, and his recollections of his life are full of tenderness, insight, candour and pathos. If he hadn't been so busy all these years being a great actor, delighting us all, he could have been a great writer, and now with this book, he is one’ (Jonathan Ames)

An honest memoir

I really enjoyed this Audio Book and I really got the sense that Patrick Stewart had been totally honest about the highs and lows in his life and career.

Simply Fantastic!

What a life, what a world to have been part of. Expertly read of course by Sir Patrick Stuart and I believe nobody else would have been able to do it the justice his story deserves. I laughed out loud and also had to hold back the tears. I loved it!

a wonderful glimpse of the man behind the captain

I struggle with audio books when I don't know the plot, but despite this being twice as long as a normal book I'd read/listen to it held my attention throughout at times reducing me to near tears as Stewart shares such personal things

A fascinating peek at the man behind the image

In depth, candid and well presented.
Must listen for fans of TNG and X-Men.
I was left with less respect but more fondness for Patrick Stewart.

Sublime

A wonderful insight to the life and career of the man behind the captain's uniform, the professor's chair and so much more. Delightful and sincerely sublime.

Good but a little self indulgent

Which, I suppose, is the point. I have been a big fan of Patrick Stewart for many years. Beginning with Star Trek and going through film and theatre.

This book was a fascinating insight into the man, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There are some omissions, and it races through the last 20 years in double quick time.

There are some bits that are difficult to listen to, though, and, despite trying not to let those parts cloud my judgement of him, alas, some of the shine from his star has faded for me.

But, that is a minor, personal opinion. Overall, the book is very good. Well narrated. Thoughtful, detailed (mostly) and insightful.

Well worth a listen, fan or not.

A fascinating insight

Although there were many anecdotes in here that I’d heard told before, it was still enjoyable to hear Sir Patrick relate the tales again. I come from the same part of the world the he grew up in and it was interesting to hear of the local geography described in through his own experiences of the times he grew up here. His tale from Yorkshire school kid inspired by Shakespeare, to acting lessons, drama school and then jobs between theatre companies before settling at the Royal Shakespeare company was really satisfying to listen to. He gets into his experience of working on Star Trek by about chapter 17 - so skip there if that is all you have come for, but you’re missing out on a lot - and much of this has already been told elsewhere. A worthwhile read.
