My finding and reading this book couldn't have been more well timed. I've been struggling to create/write, of late, for various reasons that are also been explored in the book. Pickens' counsel is exactly what I needed. I highly recommend the book to any artist, who needs some support.

I loved it because it gave me so much encouragement to make art no matter what is going on in my life.

If felt a bit to wish washy self-help.

I'm not sure what I was expecting or hoping for bit this didn't leave me feeling like I'd got it.

I wish someone had mentioned the intended audience before I bought this book as I don’t fit into any of the categories of people that, as the author makes clear throughout, are her demographic. The book is specifically targeted at women artists, LGBTQ+ artists, black artists, and artists from minority ethnic or religious backgrounds.

Though the book contains some great information and ideas that would be helpful to artists of all backgrounds and identities the author makes it plain from the start that, unless you are in her target audience, you are the problem and the dominant reason that her preferred readers are held back from ‘making it’ in the art world. I do totally agree that these groups of artists have historically been (and to a significant extent still are) underrepresented in and discriminated against by the mainstream art world and this must stop but by the happenstance of my own birth and background I felt consistently pushed away from the book and purposefully alienated by the author.

Anyway, as I mentioned earlier, this book contains lots of useful ideas if you happen to be part of the authors intended congregation. I just wish this had been made more clear in the audible description.

Lots of good ideas but certainly not aimed at everyone
