Captures the real Maigret
Excellent reading and perfectly captures the tone of Maigret, especially if you liked the old Michael Gambon TV series.

My favourite Maigret so far
There are so many Maigret books, it’s rather nice to just be able to pick one at random from time to time and yet still have so many to go. This, I think, is my favourite so far. It perfectly sums up the appeal of the gruff, dogged French detective - the ever-compelling cast of characters, the evocative Parisian setting, the vague sense of ever-present ennui, and whodunnit never really being the point of the story. This one concerns the murder of a good man in a good neighbourhood, with no obvious motive… and things sort of go from there. The pace is pleasingly brisk, without ever feeling rushed. There’s little in the way of major incident, aside from the murder itself. And yet, fans of Simenon will understand that that’s all part of the appeal.

It's Simenon - enough said!
Simenon was a genius. The seeming simplicity of his storytelling is anything but that, due to the wonderful writing of an author who could condense almost noir police procedurals and thrillers into 3-5 hours of great storytelling. Gareth Armstrong brings the great detective to life by breathing life into the words of the French literary genius.

Complete
Perfect story believable throughout, rational deduction with empathy and persistent suspense. Detective fiction at its best.

It seems Simenon just cannot write decent endings
The main storyline was fine with the usual excellent descriptions and superb narration by Gareth Armstrong. However, what is reading getting me down with so many Maigret books are the endings. All that buildup for virtually nothing at the end. This one was weak and implausible and, frankly, peculiar.
