Arbejderforfatteren John Max Pedersen gik i 1980'erne i gang med en trilogi om besættelsestiden. Han døde imidlertid inden han nåede at skrive den tredje bog, hvorfor dette er den første i en serie på to bind.

Året er 1940. Ligesom det meste af Danmark er den lille provinsby Middelborg stærkt påvirket af den tyske besættelse, der netop har indtaget landet. I denne bog skildres den omvæltende periode af tre lokale - en svajer, en medhjælper i en fiskehandler og den unge kommunist Børge. John Max Pedersen (f.1942-1992) var en dansk kommunist, arbejder og forfatter. Som 14-årig meldte han sig ind i DKU og kæmpede siden som værftsarbejder for arbejderens rettigheder. Hans forfatterskab begyndte med en novelle i "Fagbladet" og senere blev det til både romaner, novellesamlinger og digte. Han betragtede selv alle sine bøger som en del af en politisk kamp for et socialistisk samfund.rn
