Summary
It's 1958, and Lord James and his wife, Beth, are hosting the annual spring fair. Then wealthy recluse Delphine Brooks-Hunter is murdered. James is summoned to the reading of her will and is tasked with solving an intriguing riddle. Meanwhile, Beth tackles her own mystery after discovering a homeless man suffering from amnesia.
As they delve deeper, a number of questions emerge. What links Delphine to the fairground folk? Who would harm such a refined lady? Are rumours of World War espionage true? As they unravel the truth, they uncover far more than they ever bargained for.

not disappointing
I enjoyed the first so much that sometimes the next book can be a let down, but this was not the case. The narrator brings the characters alive, although the stuttering of Steven can be a little annoying.

A great mystery thriller
Well written and narrated. A twisting plot set in the Sussex countryside at a time when life was simpler

Wonderful
A very enjoyable, gentle murder mystery set in 1958. Superbly read by David Thorpe with an array of recognisable voices. This is the second book I’ve listened to in this series & in time I’ll be downloading them all.

Really rather good
This story is well told and has some nice characters in it. I hope some of them make other appearances in the series. There are my usual gripes; Beth's accent and Bert's tendency to shout every time he says anything, but other than that I really enjoyed it.
