In this paradise you won't like what you see . . .

When Nina's father dies, she inherits a gleaming dream vacation home in a balmy tropical paradise - one she had no idea existed. The house is extraordinary: state-of-the-art, all glass and marble. How did her sensible father ever have enough money for this? And why not tell her about it? Desperate to uncover why he hid such a big secret, she decides to visit.

Maria, once an ambitious medical student, is now a nanny for the super-rich. The money's better, and so are the destinations - like this new assignment in the British Virgin Islands. But when her wards never show, Maria begins to make herself at home, spending her days luxuriating by the pool. There's just one rule: Don't go in the basement. But her curiosity might just get the better of her. And soon, she'll wish her only worry was not getting paid.

As both women's timelines intertwine, dark secrets start to unravel and one thing quickly becomes clear - nothing could have prepared them for what they are about to encounter.

Great start, middling middle, poor end

Such an uneven writer. Some of her books are slick & incredibly well plotted with shades of Highsmith. Others, like this, flounder very quickly. Undoubtedly a great writer when she has the story, but this just doesn’t cut it.

Excellent thriller

Really interesting story, good to have a change to the usual psychological thriller. This really kept me guessing. Really rate all of Catherine’s books wish I had another one to read now! Love that they are narrated by the author as well.

Wowzers................

Let me start by saying that I enjoy audiobooks far more when narrated by the author as they know exactly how they intended it to be presented - and Catherine certainly did herself proud.
This was my first experience of Catherine's work and oh my life , WHAT a place to start! I seriously can't come up with enough superlatives !
Think twisted, extremely twisted. . ........... Think Crystal Maze meets Squid Games !
This story genuinely made my skin creep. It gave me the absolute chills and the hairs stand up on the back of my neck on many occasions. Thank you Catherine - I thoroughly enjoyed it , if of course , enjoyed is the correct word!

Just fantastic! A gripping and suspense filled unique thriller

This was one of the best I have read by Catherine Steadmen, and one of the best I have listened to overall, it was expertly written with a unique theme and many plot twists. I didn’t even know what I was reading about or where it was going for the bulk of the book which made it gripping and suspense thrilled and I just couldn’t put it down. You really will not guess what is happening next which makes for a true well scripted piece of work. Catherine always reads her own novels which adds to it as she has a fantastic narrative voice and displays a range of characters easily. Cannot recommend this enough!

Excellent

I loved this story. Such a fantastic idea and very dark.
I just wish the book had been longer. It seemed to end quite suddenly and I feel there could have been a lot more content and more exploration of the characters.

A riveting listen from start to finish

Twists and turns along the way keeping the listener on tender hooks with an appetite to hear what’s next. Well written and described helping the listener to visualise the settings. Would be good for the storyline to continue to an another book !!

Catherine Does It Again!

I absolutely love Catherine Steadmans books and this did not disappoint! Narration excellent as usual, and the storyline was brilliant - I really enjoyed the concept and it was nice to have something a bit different from your typical mystery/thriller setting. Couldn’t put it down! It was paced really well so you jump right into the story quickly and the characters were easy to remember and follow. Really enjoyed it!

This should have just been a movie scenario

The characters were not explored at all. The motivations for their actions were not really addressed. There was action, lots of it !I would have liked to hear about what drove the people to act as they did! It should have been a film rather than a book! Overall not my cup of tea at all, in contrast to the other books of Cathrine Steadman.
