About this listen

Ninety-one-year-old Alice Hoffman died alone in her top floor flat. Social services say she slipped through the cracks in a failing system. But detectives Arthur Bryant and John May of the Peculiar Crimes Unit have their suspicions. Mrs. Hoffman was not as innocent as she appeared. A former government security expert, she had once worked for their own unit, but there's no one left who can remember her. When they uncover a link between her and a diplomat desperate to leave the country, it begins to look as if someone might have committed an impossible murder.

But Mrs. Hoffman wasn't acting alone. Arthur Bryant is convinced that a group of talented women have been working together for decades and now the others are in danger. With the help of some of his more certifiable contacts and historical experts, he and John May embark on an investigation that will lead them down forgotten alleyways to riverside buildings and on to the city's oldest bridge. But just when the case appears to have been solved and unit chief Raymond Land can congratulate everyone on ending a threat to international security, the detectives discover that they've been the victims of the biggest deception of all. For even after her death, Mrs. Hoffman would prove too clever for them....

Bryant & May's 20th anniversary case brings an ending and a new beginning to London's most peculiar crimes unit and all who work there.

Heartbreaking

I was listening to London Bridge is Falling Down while ironing and had to stop to cry at the ending. I cannot bear the thought of no more Bryant and May

On and on and on!

This is my fourth Bryant and May , i don’t know why so many?
the voice of Bryant drones on and on, much better in a book and the plots are so very similar, though the london knowledge keeps one going.
Being a country mouse, and now and again those inspired witticisms, which some times hook me back in again!
I do love Bryants love hate relationship with London and all its ‘entrails’ which Bryant seems to be a critical byproduct of, with all his hygiene and medical problems ( we are constantly reminded ) v boring after a while,
I think this is overdone, and results in an old f**t droning on and on ( the readers voice completing this sense of ‘ too much’- not funny)

So ...thats it then ? We will see!

Full Circle

i could listen to these stories just for the beautiful writing and the history and geography of London, but I've also come to love the characters. At first, I thought the stories were a bit too far fetched, even a bit silly, but Christopher Fowler's skill is to build complex mysteries into his books without losing the element of fun.
This story takes the reader back to the foundation of the Unit and gives Bryant the opportunity to annoy people on both sides of the Atlantic.

Fabulous and quirky

Am new to Bryant and May, but after the initial couple of chapters, I got into the storyline and thoroughly loved it. Arthur Bryant is brilliant.

The End? … or maybe just a new beginning

I have read/ listened to every book. The members of the PCU have become old friends. Christopher Fowler you are an incredible writer - Tim Goodman, you bring the characters to life. Thank you both. I hope this is not the end, and that Mr Fowler really does have something up his sleeve and it proves to be more than a sardine sandwich or a bag of pre war boiled sweets as Mr Bryant would have kept up his!

Heartbreakingly wonderful.

I think we knew this one would be tough, going in.
What to say... wonderful book.
One highlight was definitely Raymond growing a spine, finally. Because we all love him and wanted him to succeed at something.
I've grown to adore Bryant and May over the years and what will I have to look forward to now?
Even one or two uncharacteristic mispronunciations from Tim Goodman weren't enough to bounce me out of the narrative. He is Bryant and May now.
I hope there will be something new and comforting soon, as promised, Mr Fowler!
Meanwhile, I'm off to grieve.

Heartbreakingly wonderful

I've followed this series for most of my life now, given the first one at 11 by my dad. I am utterly in love with the writing and am overjoyed to have been able to enjoy them through these audio books too.
This mystery is heartbreaking but so in keeping with the series themes and it's wonderful to see the character development in our unit chief.
loved every minute x
