About this listen

A special needs teacher who lived in 24 different places during her childhood, debut novelist Sarah Dooley taps her expertise and channels her experiences for this powerful tale.

Livvie Owen is autistic. She doesn’t feel things the same way her parents and sister do, and she’s confused why her family has to keep moving from one home to another. There is only one place where Livvie ever felt truly happy. She wants to return there now, but there’s a problem. Livvie burned that house to the ground.

What a little gem of a story !

One could describe it as a coming of age story with an ode to neurodiversity but it has a touch of the magical, with its belief in serendipity and signs of the universe. And the complexity of relationships especially when spiced up by societal expectations is perfectly rendered. I am not familiar enough with autism to assert whether this is a fair rendition of its wholly varied spectrum but it helped me vividly perceive the world from the character’s perspective which is probably its greatest feat. Indeed, an author can celebrate their accomplishment when the reader can not just empathise, understand but feel like their are the character in the story. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to a different view on life.
