About this listen
Growing Up Together
Life with Louie is a collection of coming-of-age stories about growing up with a brother who happens to have been born with Down syndrome. For the author, Mia Rotella-White, having a sibling with a disability never created hardship. The opposite is true.
Growing up with Louie meant Mia’s days were full of disco balls, group hugs, fashion shows and dance parties. When adversity struck, and it did, the siblings reminded each other how ridiculous it was to think any tragedy could ever be bigger than their love.
Life with Louie chronicles Mia’s fight for her brother’s rights as a person with a disability. The author wisely lets go of any attempt at brutality. (It’s not in her anyway.) That said, Mia didn’t always find it easy; how could she possibly stay fierce in the fight when her brother is always making her laugh until her side hurts?
Instead, she allows the stories to do the work. Life with Louie wins its part in the fight not because of the power behind its punch but because it touches the heart. And that’s exactly where change starts.
