About this listen

Life on the Mississippi expresses the full range of Twain's literary personality.

It remains the most vivid, boisterous, and provocative account of the cultural and societal history of the Mississippi Valley, from 'the golden age' of steamboating to the violence wrought by the Civil War.

A literary ramble

Whilst the subject material has some interest Twain adopts a style of indulging his literary prowess and spinning out the topic. It is a narrative and observation that veers into gossip and small-talk. Not a riveting listen but an enjoyable example of comparing insights into certain lifestyles of the time that resonate with the way we think and behave today. It gets somewhat lost in the appendices at the end.
