Great end to a wonderful series

One of the best sci-fi series about. Wonderful characters, fantastic story lines and very well read. Would recommend this series to anyone wanting to get into reading sci-fi.

A fitting end

There was only one way this book could end. When King Canute fought the tide it was only going to end one way, wet feet, but the story of how he got there is the important bit. So no spoilers but at the same time anyone who’s followed this series will now how it ends and it’s handled sensitively, with a great narrative and a very cool last chapter.
As ever it is read by the amazing Jefferson Mays who gives the characters depth and warmth and at times appropriate menace.
Some of the topics are a little hard to get your head around but as I explained to my wife, how would one ant explain to another how a car works and what drives it. Expect to be challenged at times but none the less an excellent story from start to finish and a very fitting end to the series.
Looking forward to any future series from Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck but until then go and take a well deserved break and rest on a job well done.

Very well written, but not the best in the series

It's a well-executed conclusion to the Expanse series. The characters are all there and delightful to hear about. I couldn't stop listening to the book. There are only 2 flaws which made me give this 4 stars.

The performance was a bit off. Particularly the faux Texas drawl of Alex wasn't quite right. It had been perfectly consistent throughout all the other books. In this one, it felt very amateurish. Don't know what happened with Jefferson Mays, but it kind of threw me off.

The writers have a few narrative gimmicks which they rely on too much. For example "the screen was not to scale, if it was then the ship would be too small to see", "something niggled at the back of my mind", and characters noting "that was interesting". Normally not an issue, but they introduced another one here. When a ship is destroyed, they gave us a PoV of someone up to the battle started. Then they cut to some other ship observing the wreckage after the battle. It worked amazingly well the first time it happened in this book. Then they did it 3 or 4 more times. Kind of seems like it was a crutch to not write more combat. It made things feel underwhelming.

Anyways. This was still a very solid book which wrapped up the story masterfully. It's not the best book in the series, but it is still definitely worth getting.

The final chapter of the expanse

Fantastic ending to a phenomenal story. Easily one of my favourite Sci-Fi series now. It will always hold a place in my top 5.

Perfect end for the sci-fi epic

I've been reading and re-reading the expanse since the 1st book came out oh so many years ago. And though we all know how hard it is to finish epic stories like these James S.A. Corey managed to pull it off. All ends are tied off neatly and I really loved the new additions to the cast of characters in this one.
Though the book does continue in a similar style as other later expanse books - a bit slow, a bit repetative, a bit tired, just like the characters in the story... But, I didn't mind, it still felt like a proper last chapter for the story.

Always hard to stick the final story

Not an easy listen given some of the pacing but I have read/listened to so many 'final books' that do a bad job of meeting expectations for some fans and subverting them for others that I would have to say that I liked they way this did it. It had enough of a connection that I cared about what happened to the characters I have followed for the last eight books but still felt like some bits where shoehorned in just because it was the last book, which is the norm. Well done all involved and thanks for the journey.
