Il nonno, ebreo, nato il diciassette novembre 1938, giorno in cui in Italia vengono promulgate le leggi razziali, ha trascorso la propria vita senza sentirsi autorizzato a esistere. Andato in pensione al termine di una brillante carriera come consulente, si ritira nella borgata di montagna dove durante la guerra si era rifugiato con la sua famiglia e dove vuole morire.

Il ragazzino, un preadolescente sensibile ed estroverso, appassionato di fumetti, che viene affidato a lui perché il padre, malato, deve sottoporsi a una delicata terapia, entra in quella che potrebbe essere la sua ultima stagione in modo perentorio e imprevisto.

Così, mentre sulle rive del lago artificiale in cui si specchia il paesino il giovane verrà in contatto con il proprio passato e con il proprio futuro, il nonno riceverà, tramite lui, quell'iniziazione gioiosa alla vita che la Storia gli aveva negato, riuscendo, forse, al crepuscolo del secolo, a non essere più un fantasma.
