About this listen

When Left Shoe sails into the teeth of a storm, he catches sight of a strange object riding on the crest of a towering wave. But there is something else in the water too, deep in the silent blackness. Waiting. Watching. Before Left Shoe can return to his village in Foamy Bay, he must find the courage to defeat the seadogs greatest enemy, and rescue something precious. Left Shoe and the Foundling is the first in a series of picture books about the Sandburrow family and their life in the seaside village of Foamy Bay.©2005 Annie O'Dowd. Editor reviews

Not many humans know the world of the seadogs, the lovely dogs who live in villages by the sea. Annie O'Dowd performs the audiobook of her own story, bringing us into one of these villages and introducing us to its inhabitants and their ways. In this episode we meet Left Shoe, a sea dog who has an exciting adventure out on the breakers. The little seadog is a brave sailor who finds a treasure on the water but must first contend with one of the most menacing creatures to inhabit the murky depths. O'Dowd's sweet, smooth voice becomes a yip or a howl when the story warrants it, making this a treat for any young seadog or inquisitive child.

Critic reviews

"Not since Brambly Hedge has an imaginary world been so brilliantly brought to life." (Good Reading)
"A comforting soundscape of gentle waves begins this fantasy. In chimes the voice of author-narrator Annie O'Dowd, with her calming Australian accent. O'Dowd reads with enthusiasm, and you sense her passion for her work." (AudioFile Magazine)
