Summary
Las Palmas De Gran Canaria - the metropolis of the Canary Archipelago. A city with several faces, in the middle of the Atlantic. With a romantic old town, a harbor district and an endless beach with a promenade. The pulsating life of Las Palmas contrasts with the quiet and rural island.
Plaza Santa Ana, lined with palm trees, is the focal point of Vegueta, where spiritual and secular power has lived since the Conquista. The square dominates the Santa Ana Cathedral, named after the patron saint of the Spanish conquistadors, an imposing magnificent building made of brown natural stone, whose two towers dominate the old town.
The posh district is Ciudad Jardin. This garden city was created as a residential area between the old town and the harbor on the initiative of British merchants at the end of the nineteenth century. No Canarian fiesta can do without a guitar, tambourine and castanets. The folklore songs are very popular and part of the Canarian identity. The women wear white tops and long flowing skirts, the men embroidered jackets, white short skirts and calf protection.
Playa De Las Canteras invites you to visit and is one of the most beautiful city beaches in the world, comparable to the Copacabana in Rio. Las Palmas is a metropolis and boomtown in one. The only place in the Canary Islands that reminds of a big city.
