About this listen
Land of Careful Shadows by award-winning author Suzanne Chazin is a powerful mystery full of passion and secrets that deals with a clash of cultures and familial relationships, and it's full of drama, mystery, and raw emotions.
When the dead body of a Latino woman is found in a reservoir about 50 miles north of Manhattan, with a photo of a baby in her purse nearby, the police try to determine who the child is and if it is still alive. Along with the photo, they also find a disturbing note in the purse: "Go back to your country. You don't belong here."
Homicide detective Jimmy Vega is Latino too, so he knows how hard it can be for an outsider to fit into a close-knit town like Lake Holly. Vega is a highly respected officer of the law, and he is challenged and intrigued by Adele Figueroa, a passionate defender of immigrants' rights. Vega must rethink everything he believes in order to uncover the truths about his town, his family, and himself.
Land of Careful Shadows is a tour de force of literary suspense and an intimate journey into the human heart.

The intertwined lives of the haves and have nots.
It’s not a unique tale when a vulnerable girl has been cheated by a powerful man. Then two kids make a mistake instead of owning their mistake. But a guilty conscience never rests until the truth comes out. Even if nobody wins the truth sets you free.

There is the law and there is what is right
Echoes of The Grapes of Wrath as we learn of the divide between the documented ad the undocumented in America and the powerlessness of the poor. The novel is exciting and the plot moves forward driven by the choices made by characters who grow and learn sometimes painfully that life can be unfair. Jimmy Vega is a cop through and through but he learns that having a heart matters more. There are more in his series to read and you know you want to see how his life develops, what else is thrown at him and how he deals with it. A great story granting uncomfortable insight into human failings but also assuring us that we can live with consequences if we do the right thing.

a reasonable read
enjoyed it but in all likelihood ask me in 2 qeeks time what it was about and I won't remember. I like crime novels, although mostly do British ones, so this was enjoyable but not one I will remember.
