Summary

Lamb traces the self-discovery of David Lamb, a narcissistic middle-aged man with a tendency toward dishonesty, in the weeks following the disintegration of his marriage and the death of his father. Hoping to regain some faith in his own goodness, he turns his attention to Tommie, an awkward and unpopular 11-year-old girl. Lamb is convinced that he can help her avoid a destiny of apathy and emptiness, and even comes to believe that his devotion to Tommie is in her best interest. But when he decides to abduct a willing Tommie for a road trip from Chicago to the Rockies, planning to initiate her to the beauty of the mountain wilderness, they are both shaken in ways neither of them expects.

Lamb is a masterful exploration of the dynamics of love and dependency that challenges the boundaries between adolescence and adulthood, confronts preconceived notions about conventional morality, and exposes mankind’s eroded relationship with nature.

Critic reviews

Lamb is a remarkable debut by a writer to watch. I will be thinking about these characters for a long time.” (Aimee Bender, New York Times best-selling author)

Well written but a chilling & haunting book

This book does everything it sets out to do and more. It's exceptionally well thought through but the subject matter had my skin crawling from beginning to end. A very challenging thought provoking read but chilling.

Fantastic story!!!!! Binge listened in one day.

Loved loved loved this. Hope there are many more titles down the line by the same author. Narration was fantastic too. This was a freebie in audible membership and it did not disappoint!! I wish the story could have gone on longer. It was a really good interesting book. A well deserving 5 stars. Don’t miss out. Have a listen.

TAKE A VERY DEEP BREATH BEFORE YOU BEGIN.

This is a very disturbingly brilliant novel. I felt it was better than Lolita, which it will inevitably be compared too. In that book, the we only have the main character's point of view and he glosses over his abuse with words of love and passion. Even the destruction of Lolita at the novel's conclusion is seen through his eyes as a great disappointment. In Lamb we are told the story through a third person omnipotent narrator which allows us to see clearly the abuse and manipulation.
Tavia Gilbert's narration is pitch perfect, her interpretation of the characters, especially Tommie is heart breaking. I do recommend this audio, especially as it is free, although I am going to buy it, but be warned it is a difficult listen and take a very, very deep breath before you start.

Not to my taste

Expected something completely different but the whole book was basically about manipulation and child abduction. Not a single character I warmed to or empathised for, wish I had never read this kept waiting for something hopeful to happen.
