Summary
In a medieval land four identical brothers, in the guise of one prince, battle a mysterious evil.
A riveting tale of fantasy and adventure, Kinghood follows the secret lives of quadruplets Symon, Dawkin, Ely, and Gerry. Since birth, they have taken turns serving as their island’s monarch-in-waiting, Prince Jameson. Through careful planning, they have managed to cultivate the image of a perfect royal, a rising star within their kingdom. Handsome. Strong. Intelligent. Charismatic. A natural-born leader.
But such an icon has come at a cost. The alliance between brothers is fragile and taut, with each different in personality and ambition, eager to make their own mark on the world.
In the midst of this darkness and intrigue, their father the king is assassinated. Chaos ensues. Allies talk of usurping the throne while murderers and plotters seem to stalk every corner. Forced to put aside their differences, the brothers unite to face their enemies and rise as one.

Kinghood: An epic story.
I was given a free copy of this book, and I'm leaving an honest and voluntary review.
Firstly the story itself. It's a great fantasy adventure, plenty if action and full of twists and turns, it's very interesting and entertaining. The characters are very likeable and brought to life with great narration.
The narration. David Nickerson has done an amazing job giving each character individualailty and brining them to life.
The effects: The sound effects are great, giving you a cinematic experience whilst having the enjoyment of a great fantasy adventure.
Over all it's a very enjoyable and well worth checking out.

Technical issues undermined the book
I should start by saying that the narrator was excellent and the voice perfect for this style of book. It felt like the narrator was one of the characters retelling the story.
However, there were some major issues with the performance that undermined it. Firstly, there was some sort of stylisation applied to the voice that made it very difficult to listen to through my (low quality) headphones. Listening with any type of background noise was almost impossible. Secondly, there were regular sound effects with varied quality, at times these really added to the ambiance, tolling bells for example, but others included sword fighting that distracted and competed with the narrator. Finally, and perhaps controversially, there was music throughout whilst the narrator is talking. Whilst, it added to the ambiance, for me it was also distracting, as I found myself starting to listen to the music rather than the book. It also makes it impossible to accelerate the playback speed.
Overall, a well narrated book with an interesting twist but undermined by the added effects.

For all it’s faults, it’s an enjoyable listen.
In all honesty, I don’t get why they hide and pretend to be 1 person? Just doesn’t make sense to me and no one seems to have addressed the sleeping arrangements when they’re married!?
That being said, it’s a really pleasant listen, and the story is entertaining although there’s a lot of story without much happening.
I love the narrator, he has a very ‘storyteller of olde’ vibe and could listen to him all day. His voices are good, although his females are distorted and sound a bit chipmunk like.
I didn’t feel the special effects lent much to the story and at times they were too loud and overwhelmed the narration. Unfortunately the inner thought special effects were far too quiet and I missed a lot of what they were saying which probably spoilt it the most for me.
Again, an enjoyable listen and I wouldn’t hesitate to listen to either narrator or author again, despite my comments above.
This is my honest opinion of a free review copy.
