Summary

We need to speak of the dead. We need to speak for the dead, for they cannot speak for themselves. There are things they would want to say to us if only they could talk. But surely they cannot. No longer can we walk into the next room and find them standing there as they did in life and hear what they have to say.

They are gone. Yet.... Yet they linger. So it is with this girl who’s gone now. Her name, when they still said it aloud, was Isobel.

It's 1963. A year since the death of a girl at a prestigious private school in Massachusetts, but although she's gone, her presence still remains, affecting everyone who knew her. Killing the dead is very hard to do....

It’s a pity it is so short

Wish there was more book to read. But even it being short, does not leave ends loose. I am going to look for more books from the author

mystery ghost story with a twist

My daughter (age 11) had to read this as the author is coming to school to do a visit. I listened to it before she did and was surprised that it is a children's book. Set in 1963 it deals with a male young teacher who fancies his teenage student and tries to hook up with her, drugs, suicide, ghosts and death not to mention a few other inappropriate subjects. Having said that, I did enjoy it and it reminded me of one of the old Roahl Dahl tales of the unexpected short stories from the 80's that always had an unexpected twist at the end. As I enjoyed it, I did let my 11 year old listen to it, and she too found it really good, but agrees with me it's not really for children under the age of 14 as the subject matters are very adult. It is well written, though at a slow pace until the last 15 minutes when the action suddenly all comes together and it all makes sense. It is a short story, only 2 hours long. Well narrated.

A 2 hour story - don't bother

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

Hadn't realised what this was when I downloaded it. A 2 hour story is not worth bothering with particularly when the story is not very interesting. Some arty farty types may disagree, but at the end of the day if a story is not very interesting and doesn't engage the listener, then any number of awards cannot change that!
