Summary

In 1899 two women from very different backgrounds are about to embark on a journey together - one that will take them from the Old World to the New, from the 19th century into the 20th, and from the comfort and familiarity of England to the rigors of Western Canada, where challenges await at every turn.

The journey begins simply for Kicker Stuart when she leaves her home village to take employment as hostler and farrier at Grindleshire Academy for Young Ladies. But when Kicker falls in love with a teacher, Madelyn Bristow, it radically alters the course of her tranquil life.

Together, the lovers flee the brutality of Madelyn's father and the prejudices of upper crust England in search of freedom to live, and love, as they choose. A journey as much of the heart and soul as of the body, it will find the lovers struggling against the expectations of gender, the oppression of class, and even, at times, each other.

What they find at the end of their journey is not a new Eden, but a land of hope and opportunity that offers them the chance to live out their most cherished dream - a life together.

Contains mature themes.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC.💖

This storyline is brilliant and I loved the characters struggles, romance and destiny in this aspiring adventure.
Narration was excellent, a true portrayal of British accents and she nailed it. 🎶💯

A beautiful love story

A great read. A few other reviews mentioned that the narration, particularly the accents, ruined it for them. Honestly, Kicker's accent is weird, what is it even meant to be? But I got used to it and it definitely didn't ruin anything for me. Loved it.

An epic love story but horrible narration

I love the plot of this story and Lois Clorec Heart is an impressive writer. Unfortunately, though, it is badly spoiled by Amy Landon's narration, which as a Brit I found quite horrible to listen to.

AL is good at conveying the overall mood of the novel and the emotions of the characters but her accents for the characters, especially Kicker but also other characters and sometimes Madeleine too, was mostly a mish-mash of unrecognisable - probably imaginary - dialects with a variety regional English dialect words thrown in, or upper class English with some Australian or New Zealand English pronunciation and bits of unrecognisable accents thrown in. It was was extremely distracting to listen to and often made the characters laugh-out-loud ridiculous.

AL also lacks consistency in her narration and muddles accents back and forth between the characters speaking and whichever character is narrator at the time. This makes the story quite confusing to listen to in places.

It is such a shame; this is another example of the narrator spoiling what could and should be a very good audiobook.

Strange narration spoiled this good story!

Good story... very strange narration. Weird accents which became a bit irritating, but a a good storyline, and would have been a good listen. think this would have been a brilliant book but the narration changed the tone too much.
