Summary

Odesa Freewoman has haunted this valley in southwestern Virginia for the past 100 years. Burnt alive in her wedding bed for being an accused witch, killed on her wedding night by her jealous mother-in-law, who would never understand the special powers Odesa possesses are not of this world. Lodi Bell thusly puts a curse on all of her descendants that cannot be appeased, except for the offering of the first-born daughter.

Justene is lucky for she is the third-born daughter. However, since the other two baby girls never survived, the payment falls upon her to be paid in full.

Justene never feels she belongs to her family, always seeing things that only Uncle Andrew believes are real. He is not exactly a reliable witness, as he stays drunk, reliving the battle that cost him his leg.

If Justene is going to escape the Kibler Valley curse, it is up to her drunken uncle to make the sacrifice to help her find her true self.
