How did little Jenny Hargreaves become Jenny Eclair and elbow her way into the male dominated world of 1980s stand-up?

Daughter of Major Derek Hargreaves (spy?) and June Hargreaves (spy's wife?) sister of Sara (born to be Head Girl) and Ben (the usurper), Jenny's comedy career took off via drama school, cider, sausage rolls, sleeping with men who looked like they lived under a carpet, punk poetry, anorexia, bedsit misery, waitressing and not really having a clue about anything.

This was a world before microphones, mobile phones, before everyone gave up smoking or started taking coke. Jenny Eclair was on the comedy circuit before there really was a comedy circuit and was the first woman to win the Perrier Award along the way.

Still gigging to sell-out crowds forty years later, Jenny Eclair's memoir charts her childhood, her career and the changing face of women in comedy, all told with hilarious brilliance in Jokes, Jokes, Jokes, her very funny memoir.

Honest and Funny

Brilliantly read by Jenny. A funny and honest book, Jenny doesn't shy away from owning mistakes she has made, but her love, and pride, for her family shines through. At times it also brought me to tears when she talks about her parents love. It made me laugh out loud, and occasionally snort, Not a good when dog walking. It was a joy to listen too.

Jokes Jokes Jokes...and much more

Brilliantly narrated - it almost feels conversational, there's a warmth to the narration which may come as a surprise if your only exposure to Jenny Eclair is as a comedic persona.

There are fascinating insights into the comedy world, some frank admissions about motherhood and, as promised, a lot of laughs.

Highly recommend.

Brilliant

Honest, funny...being a similar age there were lots of things I could identify with. So interesting to have an insight in to Jenny's life. I loved it.

Honest, touching, light and fun

This has the depth and observation of the little details in life that made Jenny’s Little Lives series so sweet and enjoyable.
She is very honest about herself and how she feels. I would say she that she is more honest than most people would be and sometimes rather harsh on herself, but she exhibits a vulnerability that is not contrived in any way. Having said that, it is also light and amusing- a difficult trick to pull off, but she does and it is very endearing.

Jokes Galore!

Books written by celebrities often aren't much good - even when written by ghost writers! - but this is an honourable exception.
Could make an Ideal Christmas present for a more ribald and down to earth female relative, or men who would like to understand them better.

Absolutely brilliant memoir read perfectly by Jenny herself. Laugh out loud funny honest and brave.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this, you won’t want to stop. Details her life all the way from babyhood to present day. Searingly honest and self deprecating the exploits she got herself into are many and varied and she doesn’t shy away from telling us it all. Brilliant book by one of our national treasures.

Honest and throughly entertaining.

Very honest memoir as you would expect from Jenny. She describes herself warts and all which is very rare these days. Her description of family life in the 60's and 70's, brought back fond memories of my own childhood and her love for her parents shines through, without the gushing sentimentality so prevalent today.
